CHINA GROVE — Central Cabarrus won 58-41 at Carson on Friday in a matchup of teams looking for their first victory.

Myajah Nix had 20 points and 13 rebounds for the Vikings, posting her third double-double of the young season.

Jahnae Duncan scored all 13 of her points in the second half of the South Piedmont Conference game and added six rebounds and four assists. Daniyah Burton also scored 13 for the Vikings.

Carson was only down five points early in the fourth quarter but went cold, and the Vikings (1-5, 1-1) were able to pull away.

“We were in it, but we couldn’t make any shots down the stretch,” Carson coach Chloe Monroe said.

Julia Burleson scored 14 to lead the Cougars. Allie Martin and Rylee Hedrick scored seven each.

Martin had a tough shooting night but had eight rebounds and eight assists.

Carson shot 27 percent from the field and was 2-for-18 on 3-pointers.

Carson (0-5, 0-2) is playing much more competitive games than it did last season, but the first win has been elusive.

GRANITE QUARRY — Northwest Cabarrus overcame a 25-point effort by Mary Church and beat East Rowan 53-51 in overtime on Friday.

Church scored one short of her career best.

“We had the lead with less than a minute,” East coach Bri Evans said. “Just have to make better decisions at the end of games.”

Northwest Cabarrus (5-1, 2-0) looks to be one of the South Piedmont Conference’s best teams and was able to rally past East.

“They are a good team, but we competed with them,” Evans said. “That’s the best game we’ve played so far.”

Savannah Wise scored eight for the Mustangs (2-1, 1-1), with Kady Collins, Sadie Featherstone and Lily Kluttz adding five each.
