Area sports briefs: Kennedy is medalist

West Rowan’s Jake Kennedy was medalist at the The 3A Midwest Regional held at Lake Louise on Monday.
Kennedy shot 1-under 70 to qualify as an individual for the state championships.
Also qualifying for the state event as individuals were Robinson’s A.T. Cashwell, who finished second with a 72, and Statesville’s Jack Archibald, who shot 75.
Marvin Ridge (310), Charlotte Catholic (322) and Weddington (324) were the three team qualifiers.
Statesville (327) finished fourth. East Rowan was fifth at 338, and West Rowan was seventh at 344.
The 3A championships will be held at Foxfire near Pinehurst.
Prep tennis
Salisbury’s boys tennis team is at home today at 4 p.m. against Maiden for a second-round matchup in the 2A dual team state playoffs.
Salisbury (14-3) is the No. 1 seed from the Central Carolina Conference, while Maiden (16-3) is a No. 2 seed from the Catawba Valley.

Prep soccer
Girls soccer first-round matchups have been posted by the NCHSAA. Games are scheduled for Wednesday.
In 1A, North Rowan (10-8-2) received a wild-card berth and will play on the road at Kernersville Bishop McGuinness (11-3-1), a No. 1 seed.
Gray Stone (14-2), the YVC’s No. 2 seed, is at Elkin (7-11-1), a No. 2 seed from the Mountain Valley.
In 2A, Salisbury (10-6-1), the fourth-place finisher in the CCC, is at Waxhaw Cuthbertson (15-4-1), a No. 1 seed.
In 3A, NPC No. 1 seed West Rowan (18-3-1) is at home against Hickory Ridge (8-7-1). The Ragin’ Bulls are a No. 4 seed from the South Piedmont.
Carson (8-7-3) is the NPC’s No. 3 seed and plays at Weddington (14-4-2), a No. 2 seed.
A.L. Brown (12-8-1) is the SPC’s No. 3 and plays at Charlotte’s Berry Academy (5-11), a No. 2 seed.

Local golf
Elliot Gealy (Salisbury) shot 2-under 70 in a U.S. Open local qualifying tournament held at Pinewild Country Club in Pinehurst on Monday. Gealy finished in a four-way tie for seventh and earned an alternate slot.
There were 117 golfers competing — with just eight automatically advancing to sectional qualifying. Gealy was one of the two alternates.
Salisbury’s Frank Adams III had a near-miss. He shot 71 and tied for 13th.
College softball
Western Carolina senior outfielder Erin Foster (West Rowan) was named to the All-Southern Conference first team on Monday.
Foster is batting .366 and leads the Southern Conference with 18 homers — second-highest total in SoCon history. She’s second in the conference with 64 hits, third in runs with 45 and fourth in RBIs with 54.
She has reached base safely in 21 straight games.
College baseball
Guilford’s Avery Rogers (East Rowan) appeared in 13 games and pitched 24 innings as a freshman.
He started one game and finished with a 1-1 record.
Rogers struck out 17, walked eight and had a 7.88 ERA.
He plans to play with the Rowan County Legion team this summer.
Minor leagues
The Kannapolis Intimidators used a four-run fourth to edge Hickory 5-4 in South Atlantic League baseball played at CMC-NorthEast Stadium on Monday.
Martin Medina and Ross Wilson had two-run singles in the big inning.
Jeremy Williams and Drew Robinson homered for Hickory.
The teams conclude the series tonight at 7:05 p.m. The Budweiser Clydesdales will make an appearance at the ballpark from 4-7 p.m.
Middle schools
Baseball
Erwin beat China Grove 18-7, the first loss for the Red Devils.
Ike Freeman hit two homers and knocked in four runs for the Eagles.
Tanner File had four hits, scored four runs and was the winning pitcher. Addison Fry added three hits for the Eagles (9-3), while Chandler Blackwelder had two.
Erwin plays Knox today.
North Rowan won 6-4 against Southeast. Noah Gonzalez, Corbin Smith, and Steven Thurston led the Mavericks with two hits apiece.
Brandon White pitched a complete game and struck out five.
North plays Corriher-Lipe at home today.
Golf
The conference tournament was held on Monday at Country Club of Salisbury.
Erwin shot 159 to win it.
Medalist Logan Shuping shot 32. Other scorers for Erwin were Nick Lyerly (37), Mason Basinger (44) and Ike Emerson (46).
China Grove shot 184. Brennan Lambert fired a 36 for the Red Devils. Other scorers were Bobby Bauer (48), Alex Lentz (49) and Colton Brewer (51).
Knox shot 205. Scorers were David Derrick (45), Jake Pryor (51), Jake Goodnight (54) and Dante Cataldo (55).
Southeast shot 208. Scorers were Joseph Mitchem (48), Devin Prowker (51), Miguel Miller (52) and Nate Faulkner (57).
West Rowan shot 213. Scorers were Dylan Phillips (52), Mark Robbins (52), Josh McSwain (54) and Matt Myers (55).
Boys soccer
Knox beat West Rowan 6-1 on Monday as Arturo Ramirez scored a hat trick for the Trojans. Santiago Caballero, Marlon Cruz and Josh Lynch produced a goal apiece.
Assists were by Lynch, Nick Veros and Andres Cervantes.
Matt Woolly had six saves as the Trojans’ goalkeeper.
Southeast got goals from five different players and beat North Rowan 5-0. Raunel Vasquez, Brian Fragoso, Pedro Perez, Braxton Rogers and Ricky Maldonado scored for the Patriots.
Leading the defense were Peter Lor, Castulo Pacheo, Jesus Jaimes, Brandon Flores and goalkeeper Ines Garcia.
Girls soccer
Southeast’s girls beat North Rowan 3-0.
Farrah Jordan scored twice for the Patriots. Maria Delgado had a goal and an assist.
Alexa Escobar, Katie McClain, Zully Amaya, Graciela Nunez and goalkeeper Tera Pena led Southeast’s defense.
Boys tennis
Erwin defeated China Grove 9-0.
Winners in singles for the Eagles were Robert Gray, Anthony Morrow, Timmy Kane, Tanner McNabb, Boyd McCall and Zakk Perdue.
Winners in doubles were Gray, Morrow, Wyatt Bryant, Kane, Blake Safrit, and Sawyer Russell.
Catawba athletics
Catawba’s Alli Justice was named to the Capitol One Academic All-District III softball team.
Catawba’s Brett Underwood was named to the Academic All-District III baseball team.
Both move on to consideration for Academic All-America honors.
Youth softball
The Lady Razorbacks 8U softball team won the Top Gun ‘B’ Spring State Championship at Rocky River Park. The Razorbacks (4-0) beat Alexander Attitude 15-9, Blue Thunder 10-0, and topped the Fireballs 14-9 and 15-9.
Youth basketball
Centralina Crossover, a Rowan eighth-grade boys basketball team, won the three-day Best of the Best Showdown Tournament in Charlotte.
Rowan defeated Concord’s CC Flight, Charlotte’s Team United and Weddington’s WCWWA.
Centralina Crossover won the championship game against the Salisbury Phenoms 63-54.
The Crossover roster includes Austin Love, Jalyn Cagle, Cody Meadows, Christian Holbrook, Keldrick Wilson, Dearius Phillips, Devon Morrison, Tyler Rary and Josh Handy.
CC Rowan is coached by Bryan Corpening and Steve Berger.
CC Rowan will compete in the State USBA event on May 18-20.
Youth baseball
The Landis-based Carolina Hurricanes won the 15U division in the Nations Baseball May Blast held at Jack Hughes Park in Pineville.
Team members are from South Rowan A.L. Brown, Mt. Pleasant, Cox Mill, Northwest Cabarrus and Corriher-Lipe Middle.
A-rod Kennerly, Burke Fulcher, Chandler Corriher, Eric Stowe, Ryan Ashworth, Trace Hagler, Brandon Hartsell, Kaleb Kluttz, Gray Wassweiler, Tristan Wyatt and Chandler Hubbard. The Canes, coached by Mike Kennerly and Brian Fulcher, were making their season debut.

Salisbury Parks & Recreation has summer sports camps available.
