College women’s basketball: Catawba wins on road

NEWBERRY, S.C. — Catawba’s women’s basketball team stopped a two-game slide by beating Newberry 71-57 on the road on Wednesday.

It was the last pre-Christmas action for the Indians, who will enjoy a long break after beating the Wolves (5-8, 4-5).

Catawba (8-5, 6-3) won the South Atlantic Conference game mostly because Nala Baker and Kairah Dixon-Booker were very hot from 3-point range. Baker was 3-for-4, while Dixon-Booker was 3-for-3

Baker scored 18, Dixon-Booker, who didn’t miss from the field, had 13, and freshman Bailee Goodlett  (North Rowan) added 10 for the Indians. Goodlett shot 5-for-9 and had three steals.

Janiya Foskey had nine points and nine rebounds in a quiet Eleazer Arena with 135 fans in attendance.

After taking a 37-30 lead at the half, Catawba controlled the third quarter to go up by 16.

Catawba had a rebounding advantage and won the turnover battle 22-17.
