Global Positioning System (GPS) technology has improved everyone’s ability and confidence to navigate, whether on long road trips or in remote areas of the backcountry.

OnX, a leader in the field, makes technology available specifically to hunters and anglers via its app. That app allows users to know exactly where they are in relation to terrain features and property lines. With onX’s commitment to accurate navigation and its belief in conservation and public lands, a natural partnership with Three Rivers Land Trust (TRLT) was formed.

On Thursday, Three Rivers Land Trust announced that onX has awarded TRLT a grant of $48,000 to improve their Sportsman Access Program (SAP). The SAP provides low-cost access to lands owned by TRLT and managed specifically for wildlife.

“Access to land for hunting has become incredibly competitive and outrageously expensive,” TRLT Development Associate Michael Chupita said. “The SAP is an excellent opportunity for hunters to access thousands of acres of low-pressure and low-cost private lands, all while supporting local conservation.”

The SAP is a lottery program similar to draw-hunt opportunities on public land. In the SAP, the participant picks their desired hunt block and the week(s) they would like to hunt. That information is then input into permit-draw software that randomly selects the winner.

The SAP is a vast improvement from the previous TRLT hunt lease system.

“Before the SAP, TRLT would lease its major land holdings to only a few individuals or small hunt clubs,” TRLT Executive Director Travis Morehead said. “We can now more efficiently and equitably provide hunting access opportunities to an increased number of participants with differing skill and income levels.

“Partnering with onX in this effort is great for hunters, great for access, and great for making lasting memories afield.”
