High school wrestling: Both Falcon teams close in on SPC titles

MOUNT ULLA — West Rowan’s boys wrestling team won twice on Tuesday in the South Piedmont Conference, beating Concord 64-11 and East Rowan 66-6.

West is 5-0 in the SPC, with its last two league matches coming up against Carson and Robinson. Those matches will be staged on Jan. 14.

West’s Kevin O’Brien, undefeated at 144 pounds this season, is closing in on the county record for wins. Danny Misenheimer, who finished his career at East Rowan in 2000, is recognized as the record-holder. Misenheimer won 173 of his 186 matches.

West Rowan’s girls also are 5-0 in the SPC and are headed for the conference championship.

West’s girls posted 64-11 victories against East Rowan and Concord on Tuesday.

The West girls also will wrestle Carson and Robinson on Jan. 14. Both of those teams have a limited number of wrestlers.
