Friday games …

CONCORD — One minute into the game at Concord’s Rimer Gym, East Rowan senior Sadie Featherstone had seven points on a drive, a stick-back and a 3-pointer.

Sadie 7, Spiders 0.

Featherstone got the Mustangs off to a quick start. They led all the way and cruised 71-51 against the Spiders for a South Piedmont Conference victory. It was East’s third game in three nights, so everyone, even Featherstone and Mary Church, got to rest quite a bit.

Church followed up Featherstone’s early explosion with an unstoppable first quarter, tossing in baseline runners and making two 3-pointers. She had 13 in the quarter, and East led 29-15.

Church and KP Pfister made 3s in the second quarter, as the Mustangs (14-3, 6-3) took a 45-27 halftime lead.

Kady Collins, Savannah Wise and Lily Kluttz made tough shots in the second half, as East finished off a season sweep of the Spiders. Church’s only two points of the second half came on free throws after Collins was shoved in the back and a technical foul was called.

Church has scored in double figures in 15 of East’s 17 games and has scored 20 or more seven times.

Collins scored in double figures for the eighth time. Featherstone has scored in double figures in eight of her last 11 games. Wise had her  biggest game since she scored 11 against North Stanly very early in the season.

Concord (3-12, 3-6) has several girls who can score and has won against Carson, West Rowan and South Rowan in the SPC.

HUNTERSVILLE — Carson’s girls are a M.A.S.H. unit and had no chance at Lake Norman Charter.

“Just really short-handed right now, but learning some life lessons,” Carson coach Chloe Monroe said.

The Knights (10-5, 6-3) can score in flurries. They got 25 points from Abby Courtney and 22 from Reece Long in a 67-32 South Piedmont Conference victory. The Knights made six 3-pointers and 19 of 33 free throws.  Courtney had nine of her team’s 23 steals.

LNC led 24-9 after a quarter, and it was 43-16 at the half.

Julia Burleson scored 14 for Carson (3-14, 1-8), her second-best game of the season, while Rylee Hedrick had eight points, but Allie Martin, Carson’s scoring leader for the season, fouled out in the third quarter and scored only six.  Caylee Sheets made a 3-pointer in the third quarter, while Brooklyn McBride made a free throw.

The Cougars dressed eight. Emma Carpenter is out with a broken hand and has missed the last four games. Laila Furr has been out with a concussion since the Christmas Tournament. Miley Benfield suffered a concussion in Thursday’s game with Northwest Cabarrus. Caylee Snow has been out for an extended period with a foot injury.

Carson lost to Lake Norman Charter at home, 51-39, early in the season.

Martin, a senior who missed her junior year recovering from ACL surgery, scored her 500th career point in a recent game with South Rowan.

‘Allie played minimal minutes as a freshman and missed all of her junior season, so that’s an accomplishment we’re super-proud of,” Monroe said.
