MOUNT ULLA — South Rowan senior Kynlee Dextraze poured in 34 points, half of her team’s output, in Friday’s 68-41 South Piedmont Conference win at West Rowan.

“Good team win, with a lot of great assists from all over tonight,” South head coach Alex Allen said. “We were beating the press, finding the open person, getting some easy buckets in transition. We made plenty of mistakes, but it was a solid win.”

A Lenoir-Rhyne softball signee, Dextraze has been a steady post presence for South since she was a freshman, but she had never had a scoring game like this. Her previous career-best was the 24 she scored against Central Cabarrus as a junior. Her previous high this season was 20 against Lake Norman Charter.

After Friday’s explosion, she has 820 career points. She is 17th in career scoring at South. She passed a couple of taller post players — Kat Van Wieren (Class of 2008) and Alexius Blackwood (Class of 2004) on Friday.

Dextraze had 10 points at halftime and appeared headed for a pretty routine night, but then she had eight field goals and eight free throws in the second half. She got 15 points in the fourth quarter.

South shot 31 free throws and made 18, with Dextraze going 8-for-11 at the line. The Falcons got to the foul line 24 times but only made eight free throws.

Danica Krieg got the Raiders started, She got eight of her 10 points in the first quarter, as South (6-9, 3-6) took a 20-6 lead.

South was cold in the second quarter from the field and the foul line, but still had a comfortable 27-11 halftime lead.

South made two 3-pointers in the game, with Krieg and Ella Morgan connecting from long range.

“A lot of girls played really well defensively,” Allen said. “They did a great job, although it won’t show up in the scorebook.”

West (0-13, 0-9) got 19 points from Sydney Smith, who posted a career-high. She had missed the three previous games with illness.

Jameila Allen, West’s leading scorer for the season, had 10 points. Jayden Carter made two 3-pointers and scored eight.

West scored 30 points in the second half, with Smith firing in 18 after halftime, including a 3-pointer.

Half of South’s six wins this season have come against West Rowan. The Raiders swept the South Piedmont Conference meetings — the game at South early in the season was tight — and also had a 40-point win in a Christmas Tournament contest.
