College women’s basketball: Catawba Indians beat Wingate

SALISBURY — Catawba’s women’s basketball team forced 30 turnovers and beat Wingate 70-67 in South Atlantic Conference action on Wednesday in Goodman Arena.

Freshman Bailee Goodlett (North Rowan) led the Indians with 13 points, four assists and three steals. Goodlett made two free throws with four seconds left f0r the final points after the Indians had been clinging to a 68-67 lead for two minutes.

Catawba (11-7, 9-5) shot 41 percent to Wingate’s 43 percent, but Catawba made 10 3-pointers, twice as many as the Bulldogs (10-7, 9-4).

Mary Spry (Carson) scored 12 for the Indians. Janiya Foskey and Julie Janus had 10 each.

Laney Beale led the Bulldogs with 18.

Wingate scored 26 points in the first quarter to take the lead, but the Bulldogs were held to 11 in the second quarter as Catawba took a 40-37 lead at the half.

Catawba lost 69-63 at Wingate two weeks ago.
