College men’s basketball: Catawba edges Bulldogs

SALISBURY — Montraivis White made a 3-pointer in the final seconds to lift Catawba’s men’s basketball team to a 73-70 South Atlantic Conference win against Wingate on Wednesday night.
A crowd of 590 at Goodman Arena, watched the Indians bounce back from a dismal outing at Lincoln Memorial on Saturday with a revenge triumph against Wingate. The Bulldogs (7-8, 6-7) had outscored Catawba 90-85 on Jan. 8 at Cuddy Arena.
Catawba is 7-2 at home this season, but 4-5 on the road.
Catawba (11-7, 8-6) survived a 28-point outing by Wingate’s Kendall Taylor with balanced scoring. Solomon Tucker scored 12, Nick Walker had 11, and Justin Banks and White scored 10 each.
Freshman Chase Daniel had five assists and only one turnover in 26 minutes of action.
Wingate shot well – 51 percent from the field and 9-for-10 at the foul line — but Catawba had a critical edge (18-10) in the turnover battle. The Indians also made seven 3-pointers to the Bulldogs’ five.
Catawba raced to a 40-29 halftime lead, only to see the Bulldogs fight back in the second half. Wingate was down 13 points with 12 minutes left, but caught up at 70-all on a jumper by Mike Erbeck with 31 seconds left.
White’s decisive 3-pointer went through the cords with just two seconds left.
