KANNAPOLIS — A man has been arrested after police said he left a firearm unsecured, allowing a child to accidentally shoot and kill their sibling.

Police were initially called to a home in the 400 block of Cabarrus Arms Drive at 7:30 a.m., according to a press release from the city. When they arrived on scene, they found a seven-year-old girl who had been accidentally shot by a sibling. The girl died at the scene from her injuries.

Police investigated the incident and determined that the mother of the child’s boyfriend, 33-year-old Timothy Wayne Burris, had left the firearm unsecured at the family’s residence. Burris was arrested after the Kannapolis Police Department consulted with the Cabarrus County District Attorney’s Office and charged with felony child abuse inflicting serious injury, storing a firearm in a manner accessible to a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Burris was transported to the Cabarrus County Magistrate’s Office, where he was issued a $25,000 bond. His first court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 24.
