FAITH — It’s been at least two decades since the town of Faith held it’s traditional street dance, but that doesn’t mean Angela Webb has forgotten how to move.
The Woodleaf resident shagged with her 12-year-old daughter, Alicia, to “Rock Around the Clock” on Saturday.
Webb, who grew up in Faith, said the revived event isn’t quite the same, but it was just as fun.
“There used to be sawdust in the streets so that we could slide around,” she said.
Brenda Stone of Granite Quarry remembers the sawdust and the time she got to spend with her grandparents during street dances.
“I went to every street dance, so I’m thrilled it’s back,” she said.
Stone decided to start the tradition with her 4-year-old son, Baxter Heilig. As the two danced, she spun him around in the air.
The first street dance was held in 1946 as a kick off to the town’s annual Faith Fourth of July festivities.
Mayor Todd Peeler said the event is back this year thanks to the town merchants who sponsored it.
“I’m glad to have it back and I just want everyone to have a good time,” he said.
Hundreds of people lined Main Street with chairs to listen to Nostalgia perform a variety of music.
And when they heard a song they liked, they did what felt right and got up to bust some moves.
Julia and Will Turner of Salisbury enjoyed a slow dance to an Eagles song with their infant daughter, Ava, snuggled in between them.
Faith native Larry Frick donned a wide smile as he sang to his sweetheart Pauline Cochran, and the two swayed together in the street.
“We’re having a great time,” he said.
