KANNAPOLIS — The smile on Candice Smith’s face never faded as she served up trays of food containing chicken strips and slices of watermelon to a hoard of hungry children earlier today.
“It’s just a good feeling,” she said about working for the Kannapolis City school system’s summer feeding program.
During the year Smith is a child nutrition operator at Jackson Park Elementary, but this summer she decided to lend a hand with the program, which dishes up lunch to about 200 children ages 2 to 18 Monday through Thursday at A.L. Brown High School.
“I think this is very helpful,” she said. “As the mother of four kids I know it’s hard to feed them at a decent price so this gives parents a little peace of mind to know they can bring their kids here to eat.”
The program isn’t just for students who attend school in the district, children from anywhere can receive the free meal.
