From staff reports
Walt Shoaf, featured in a recent story in the Salisbury Post, wasn’t jinxed at all by a little publicity.
He made a hole-in-one on his 88th birthday on his way to a sizzling round of 71 at Corbin Hills.
Playing from the gold tees, Shoaf aced the 145-yard No. 2 hole with a 3-wood. He was playing with Jerry Allman and Sal Alfieri.
Junior Legion
Rowan County’s Junior team swept Western Forsyth in a first-round series by winning 9-1 on Wednesday at Newman Park.
Joesph Peeler pitched a complete game.
Michael Caldwell had three hits, including a triple, and scored three times. Michael Pinkston had two hits and scored twice. Hunter Brooks had two hits and two RBIs. Luke Setzer drove in three runs.
Rowan’s next series will be against the winner of the Kernersville-Southwest Guilford series.
American Legion
The Rowan County-Mooresville Legends game scheduled for Wednesday was postponed.
Rowan will try to clinch the series at Mooresville High tonight. Jared Mathis is the probable Rowan hurler.
The Mooresville Moors beat Stanly 5-2 on Tuesday.
It was a marathon in Albemarle — a 10-inning game, plus an 80-minute delay for lightning. Logan Beegle pitched five strong innings before the delay, and Michael Elwell held Stanly scoreless after he took the mound in the sixth. Hunter Harvey and Holden Pender drove in runs in the 10th, and the Moors got another run on a throwing error.
Stanly stayed alive with a 12-8 road win on Wednesday. The Moors lead the series 2-1. The teams play tonight at Albemarle’s Montgomery Park.
Top-seeded Mocksville edged No. 8 seed Concord 6-5 in 11 innings on Tuesday to take a 2-0 lead in their first-round series.
In the Northern Division, Kernersville, Burlington-Graham and Randolph finished off first-round sweeps on Wednesday. See Scoreboard.
