The Salisbury Speedsters AAU and USATF Junior Olympic track team is coached by Tim Dunlap and Eric Dalton and comprised of 13 athletes ages 6-17.
The Speedsters compete against some of the top athletes in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia.
Team members include Azaevion Neal (100m, 200m, 400m), Mary Morgan(100m, 200m, 400m), Jaleiah Gibson (100m, 200m, 400m), Shawn Henderson (100m, 200m, 400m), Christian Morgan (200m, 400m, 800m),Tamia Brown (100m, 200m, 400m), Jabari Dalton (80m hurdles, 200m, 400m), Jalen Kemp (100m, 200m, 400m), Okera Dalton (100m, 200m, 400m), Kashara Brawley (100m, 200m, 400m), Cameron Dunlap (100m, 200m, 400m), Jaleesa Smoot (100m, 200m, 400m), and Alexis Kemp (100m, 200m, 400m).
Neal, Smoot and Jabari Dalton competed in Newport News, Va. Neal and Smoot advanced to the USATF National Junior Olympic Games in Baltimore. This event will be held July 22-30.
Neal, Gibson, Christian Morgan, Brown, Jabari Dalton, Jalen Kemp, Brawley, and Smoot qualified for the AAU National Junior Olympic Games in Texas. This event will be held July 30- Aug. 4.
On Saturday, July 14, the Speedsters will have a car wash at Auto Zone, 325 E. Innes St., from 8 a.m. until noon.
A drawing for a $50 Visa gift card will be held in an effort to raise money for the AAU Nationals in Texas.
Minor leagues
Mike Foltynewicz pitched six shutout innings and Delino DeShields Jr. hit a homer and stole two bases as the Lexington Legends defeated the Kannapolis Intimidators 2-0 on Tuesday night.
Foltynewicz (10-2) allowed just four hits and struck out six batters on the way to his 10th win.
Kannapolis starter Erik Johnson (1-2) took the loss. He allowed one run in five innings.
The Legends and Intimidators play again today in Lexington, Ky.
American Legion
The Mooresville Moors jumped out early and held off Statesville for an 8-6 win on Tuesday that tied the best-of-five, second-round series at a game apiece.
Jack Edmiston’s three-run homer was the key blow for the Moors.
Sean Grant homered for Statesville.
Action resumes tonight at Lake Norman High.
Rowan is scheduled to play at Mocksville’s Rich Park tonight.
Probable pitchers are Mocksville’s Matt Miller (3-2) and Rowan’s Jared Mathis (2-2).
Miller won the clincher for Mocksville in its first-round series against Concord and will try to do it again tonight.
Mocksville leads the series 2-0 and is now 8-50 against Rowan since 1982.
Top-seeded Randolph County routed Burlington-Graham 10-1 and third-seeded Kernersville knocked off High Point 11-7 in Northern Division playoff games on Tuesday.
Both those series were washed out on Monday. Game 2s are scheduled for tonight.
The Rowan Juniors lost Game 1 to the Mooresville Moors on the road on Tuesday and will be home tonight.
Showcase baseball
The Dirtbags 17U team is one of 260 teams playing in Marietta, Ga., and is 5-0 in pool play. Area players on the Dirtbags 17U team are infielders Tanner Bigham (NW Cabarrus) and Matt Vernon (Davie).
Local golf
Nicholas Lyerly lost in match play in the quarterfinals of the Championship Flight in the N.C. Junior Boys 13U Championships held Tuesday in Asheboro.
Basketball camp
Falcon Basketball Camp for boys who will be grades in 2-8 will be held at West Rowan High from 9 until noon daily on July 23-26.
The cost is $50 for four days of fun and instruction from coach Mike Gurley and West players.
There will be daily skill development, prizes and games. Campers receive a Falcon T-shirt. Contact Gurley at 704-798-2074 for information.
ASU athletics
The Yosef Club, Appalachian State University athletics’ fundraising arm, enjoyed its seventh-straight record year in 2011-12, raising $2,720,012 in the fiscal year that ended on June 30.
Fundraising efforts are headed by longtime Yosef Club director Gerald Adams, a Rowan County native.
ASU linebacker Jeremy Kimbrough, cornerback Demetrius McCray (first team) and punter Sam Martin (third team) were named to the Sports Network’s preseason All-America teams.
Stallions football
The Cabarrus Stallions football team will be taking registrations and having an informational meeting at Frank Liske Park on Saturday, July 14, at 11:30 a.m.
The meeting will be in the shelter below the tennis courts.
A free lunch of Brats and hot dogs will be provided.
The Cabarrus Stallions football program is for ages 12 – 18 and will have jayvee and varsity teams.
The Cabarrus Stallions are a member of the Pioneer Football League (PFL).
