Ryan Query (A.L. Brown, Catawba) hit two homers on Wednesday night in the second game of a South Atlantic League doubleheader in Rome, Ga.
Query led the Rome Braves to an 8-2 win against the West Virginia Power. He hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning and another two-run homer in the sixth.
The homers were the first for Query since he was sent to Rome. Query, who turns 25 next month, raised his batting average from .171 to .198 with Rome. He has nine RBIs.
Query began the season with Lynchburg and batted .259 in nine games for the Hillcats with a homer and two RBIs.
Query was playing in his 100th minor league game on Wednesday and hit two homers for the first time.
The former Catawba All-American has played for the Gulf Coast Braves and Braves affiliates in Danville and Mississippi as well as Rome and Lynchburg.
The Kannapolis Intimidators lost 3-2 at Lexington on Wednesday.
Grant Buckner and Kevan Smith hit back-to-back homers in the eighth for the Kannapolis runs, but the Intimidators couldn’t overcome a three-run homer by Delino DeShields Jr.
American Legion
Rowan’s scheduled game at Mocksville wasn’t played on Wednesday due to wet grounds.
The teams hope to play Game 3 at Rich Park tonight.
Mocksville leads the best-of-five series two games to none after beating Rowan 1-0 in Mocksville on Monday and following up with a 5-3 decision at Newman Park on Tuesday.
Rowan’s Jared Mathis and Mocksville’s Matt Miller still are the probable starting pitchers.
Game 4, if needed, would be played at Newman on Friday.
Round 3 has to begin next Monday.
The Mooresville Moors and Statesville did play their Game 3 at Lake Norman on Wednesday, and it was one for the ages.
Statesville trailed early and trailed late but won 8-7 to take a two games to one edge in the second-round series.
With scouts from the Yankees and Cardinals in attendance, Mooresville’s Hunter Harvey pitched six no-hit innings with 10 strikeouts, but he was lifted after six innings due to his pitch-count limit, and things got wild after that.
Harvey, a rising senior at Bandys, threw in the 91-94 mph range and never got below 91 on a fastball.
Catawba-bound Sean Grant pitched into the eighth inning for Statesville.
Jack Edmiston hit a two-run homer to propel the Moors to a 3-1 advantage, but the eighth inning took nearly an hour to complete, and Statesville emerged from the top of the eighth with a 5-3 lead.
The Moors came right back to take a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the eighth.
In the top of the ninth, Austin Hartness walked on a close 3-2 pitch and Travis Fetter singled in front of a three-run homer by Colby Dishmond over the scoreboard at Lake Norman. Dishmond launched an 0-2 pitch for an 8-6 Statesville lead.
The Moors got one run in the bottom of the ninth for the final tally. Dishmond, who won the opening game as Statesville’s starter, closed this one.
The teams are scheduled to play Game 4 at South Iredell tonight, with No. 7 seed Statesville needing one win to advance to the third round. That’s the crossover round in which the two Southern survivors will play the two teams left in the Northern Division.
Who pitches tonight? Both teams are getting low, and the Moors, who won Game 2 behind Sam Marshall, reportedly don’t have Logan Beegle available.
Travis Fetter and Drew Weibly are possibilities to hurl for Statesville.
Lexington Post 8 named center fielder Cody Adkins as team MVP. Adkins batted .358 with three homers and 28 RBIs.
Both Northern Division series were washouts on Wednesday. Kernersville-High Point and Randolph-Burlington have Game 2s scheduled for tonight.
Wood bat leagues
John J. Tuttle (A.L. Brown, Catawba) took a loss in the Coastal Plain League on Wednesday.
Tuttle pitched five innings in relief in a 12-inning contest against Florence and allowed three runs in the 12th. He struck out five and walked none.
Zack Russell-Myers (Davie) had a dominant outing for Columbia in a 5-1 win against Gastonia recently.
Russell-Myers is 5-0 this summer.
Craig Brooks (Catawba) has been a strong two-way player for the Morganton Aggies in the Southern Collegiate Baseball League. Brooks is 4-0 on the mound and is batting .349.
Independent leagues
The American Association’s Laredo Lemurs placed Garrett Sherrill (A.L. Brown) on the disabled list on July 8.
David Thomas (Catawba) is batting .260 for the Grand Prairie AirHogs of the American Association. Thomas has four homers and 19 RBIs.
College football
The Southern Conference and ESPN announced Wednesday that Appalachian State’s home opener versus fellow NCAA Division I FCS power Montana will kick off at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 8 and be televised nationally on ESPN GamePlan and ESPN3.
The telecast will be produced as part of the SoCon’s live broadcast agreement with ESPN. ESPN GamePlan is the network’s nationwide pay-per-view platform and ESPN3 is available online in 73 million homes.
ACC action starts with Tennessee vs. N.C. State in the Georgia Dome on Friday, Aug. 31.
SAC play opens Thursday, Aug. 30, with Glenville State vs. Carson-Newman and Mars Hill vs. Western Carolina.
CIAA play also starts Thursday, Aug. 30, with Shaw vs. Charleston (W. Va.).
Local golf
Rowan Amateur qualifying begins today at Corbin Hills.
Rocky River Golf Club remains operational this summer during its conversion to Bermuda greens.
The course is open daily with temporary greens and reduced golf fees.
On June 4, Rocky River began a project to convert its greens from bent grass to Mini Verde Bermuda.
During the project, greens fees have been reduced about 50 percent. New rates are $25 for 18 holes with cart on weekdays, and $35 for 18 holes with cart on weekends. Walking rates are $15 during the week and $25 on weekends. Nine-hole rates are also available.
Seventy-one GARS members played the first round of the annual GARS ABCD Tournament at Crescent earlier this week.
‘A’ Flight winner with a net of 66.85 was Clyde Crawford.
‘B’ Flight winner with a net of 70.37 was Don Julian.
‘C” Flight winner with a net of 66.47 was Jim Harris.
‘D’ Flight player with a net of 69.98 was Ken Miller.
Closest to the pin on No. 10 was Ron Ervin. His team won a free round at Crescent.
Basketball camp
Falcon Basketball Camp for boys in grades 2-8 will be held at West Rowan High from 9 until noon daily on July 23-26.
The cost is $50 for four days of instruction from coach Mike Gurley and West players.
