Rowan County’s American Legion team finished with a 20-20 record, making it 23 straight summers without a losing record for the program.
The last losing season was a 7-13 mark in 1989. That team fell to Stanly in the first round of the playoffs.
Rowan stood at 9-13 and 11-15 overall at its lowest points this season and finished tied for fifth in the Southern Division of Area III with an 8-10 record, but it finished strong, sweeping a playoff series from the Mooresville Legends, beating Mocksville in a five-game series and winning twice in its best-of-five series with High Point that ended the season.
Second-seeded High Point has to plunge directly into a best-of-five Area III championship series, which is set to start tonight against top-seeded Randolph at McCrary Park in Asheboro.
Game 2 will be at Finch Field on Tuesday.
High Point, which won the Area III title in 2011, and Randolph, which most recently won Area III in 2008, will represent Area III in the state tournament in Lenoir.
Northern Division teams have won Area III five of the last six seasons, with the exception being when Rowan won in 2009.
In Area IV, the Gaston Braves beat Cherryville 7-2 on Sunday to tie that series at 1-1.
Game 3 is at Cherryville tonight.
Local golf
One the second day of the Donald Ross Interclub tournament, the Country Club of Salisbury team finished one stroke behind Alamance Country Club, resulting in a two-day tie. Alamance CC claimed the overall victory via a tiebreaker.
Bill Haynes led Salisbury on Sunday with a gross score of 69 and finished in a tie for low gross. Charlie Graeber fired a gross score of 73. Victor Wallace had a net score of 68 and finished two strokes back of the net leaders. Mark Robertson, Bryan Overcash, and Ken Reid finished with a net score of 69.
Minor Leagues
The Kannapolis Intimidators announced the promotion of lefty starting pitcher Scott Snodgress to Winston-Salem. Snodgress was 3-3 with a 3.64 ERA.
The Intimidators scored 11 runs in the third inning and still lost 14-13 to Charleston, S.C., on Sunday.
Kannapolis had 15 hits. Grant Buckner drove in five RBIs. Martin Medina went 3-for-4 and scored three runs.
Youth track
Three Hurley YMCA Warriors competed in the 800-meter run in the Russell Blount Invitational on Sunday.
Alex Crook was fifth in the 13-14 division in 2:14. Andrew Burgess was eighth in the 11-12 division in 2:26. Parker Westbrook was 10th in the 9-10 division with a time of 3:00.
Sisters Christa and Tabitha Landy competed in a very strong field in the 100 and 400.
Tabitha (13-14 division) ran 13.96 in the 100 and 1:14 in the 400.
Christa (17-18 division) ran 12.59 in the 100 and 59.15 in the 400. They did not qualify for the finals.
Next Saturday, Westbrook, Burgess, Crook and Cameron Isenhour (javelin) will be leaving for Houston to compete at the Junior Nationals.
North football camp
First-year head football coach Joe Nixon is holding a camp at North Rowan on July 30-Aug. 1.
The camp for rising third-through-eighth graders will be from 9 a.m. until noon each day with a cost of $40. Campers should bring shorts, T-shirt and cleats or tennis shoes. Campers will receive a T-shirt. They can register the first day of the camp.
