Area sports briefs: Messiscos are team of the year

Emily and Anna Messisco took another gold medal in doubles beach volleyball over the weekend.
The sisters placed first in the 18U division in the Carolina Region Championship Tournament in Emerald Isle. The sisters also were named as the 18U Team of the Year for the tour.
Local golf
The Toshiba North Carolina Open continues today at the Club at Irish Creek.
Charles Frost (Pineville) leads after shooting 62-66 — 128 for 14-under par. Luke Lovell is at 129 and is alone in second.
Paul Dickens shot 63 for Wednesday’s low round.
The cut line fell at 145.
Salisbury’s Troy Beaver shot 76-75 — 151.
American Legion
The Gaston Braves beat Cherryville 9-4 in the Area IV championship series on Wednesday.
Cherryville leads the best-of-seven series 3-2. The winner advances to the state tournament. Host Caldwell County will be the other Area IV representative.
In Area III, High Point still leads Randolph 2-0 in a best-of-five series. There was no game on Wednesday.
Both teams have qualified for the state tournament. The series resumes tonight at Asheboro’s McCrary Park.
Minor leagues
Kannapolis Intimidators catcher Kevan Smith has been promoted to Winston-Salem.
The Intimidators lost 6-2 at Savannah on Wednesday. Leighton Pangilinan knocked in both runs for Kannapolis in the eighth.n The Winston-Salem Dash beat the Carolina Mudcats 7-5 on Wednesday. Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) had three hits and scored twice for the Dash. Trayce Thompson hit a grand slam.
Kane County’s Rudy Brown (South) continued a nice run of effective relief pitching on Wednesday with two scoreless innings in a 5-2 loss to Wisconsin in the Midwest League.
The 6-foot-4 lefty lowered his ERA to 2.31. He’s struck out 20 while walking three.
J.J. Jankowski (Catawba) is pitching well for the Greeneville (Tenn.) Astros in the Appalachian League. Jankowski is 3-0 with a 2.45 ERA in 11 relief appearances and has fanned 31 while walking eight.
Throwback tourney
Scooter Sherrill’s Alumni Throwback basketball tournament returns to Carson High this weekend.
Games are scheduled Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with the championship game set for Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
West Rowan is the two-time defending champion.
The eight-team tournament opens with East Rowan vs. North Rowan at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, with a Carson vs. South Rowan clash to follow.
Admission is $5 daily.
Women’s all-star games have been added to the event.

Wood bat leagues
In the Southern Collegiate Baseball League, Morganton’s Craig Brooks (Catawba) and Cameron Beard (Catawba) made the all-star team, along with Wingate’s Jess Cartner (Davie).
Hurley Y programs
The J.F. Hurley YMCA will have adult pickup soccer for ages 18-up at the Gordon Hurley Soccer Complex on Majolica Road on Sunday July 29, at 5:30 p.m. Be there at 5:15 to warm up and go over rules. There is no cost. Contact Phillip Hilliard (sports director) at 704-636-0111.
Youth softball
The 12U Rowan Lady Razorback softball team won the silver bracket in the Summer Gatorade Championship held at Hurley Park.
The Lady Razorbacks beat the Extreme Breeze 9-3 and topped the American Ponies 11-4 for the title.
The girls were presented with medallions on behalf of the National Softball Association.
The Lady Razorbacks are based in Cleveland. and travel across the area. They will be conducting try outs for the fall season. Players from ages 10-14 with an interest in tournament/travel softball can contact Jimmy Roberts at 704-775-2101 or Anita Roberts at 704-657-6960 or 704-278-7124.
Pro football
Former Wingate All-American David Jones has signed a free-agent contract with the Washington Redskins.
The cornerback was a fifth-round pick by New Orleans in 2007 and has played in 45 NFL games with the Cincinnati Bengals and Jacksonville Jaguars.
Prep football
South Rowan football seating sales to current season-ticket holders continues through July 31.
Remaining seats will go on sale to the general public, beginning Wednesday, Aug. 1.
This year there are five regular-season home games included in the $35 price.
Tickets may be purchased in the main office of the school, Monday through Thursday, from 8-12 or 1-3:30. Call the school if these dates pose a problem (704-857-1161).

North football camp
First-year head football coach Joe Nixon is holding a camp at North Rowan on July 30-Aug. 1.
The camp for rising third-through-eighth graders will be from 9 a.m. until noon each day with a cost of $40. Campers should bring shorts, T-shirt and cleats or tennis shoes. Campers will receive a T-shirt. They can register the first day of the camp.
Chiefs Club
The membership drive for the 2012-2013 Catawba Chiefs Club is under way. The goal for 2012-2013 is 500 members.
