Chiquita Shawnte Smith of Salisbury graduated from Rowan-Cabarrus Community College May 16, 2014, earning her GED. The event was held at Cabarrus Arena and Event Center in Concord. Chiquita is currently still attending GED math classes and is in her second semester of the Cosmetology program at RCCC.
The daughter of Cathy Teeter and Kevin Brotherton, both of Salisbury, she has three children, Myeshia Fudge, Nasir Fudge and Khalil Rankin.
Special thanks to the RCCC teachers who never gave up on her and always believed in her. Special thanks to Janice Jones and Beth Bowan, GED instructors at RCCC.
“I want to thank God first and foremost and for all the support I received at RCCC. It hasn’t been easy, it was tough. But I always believed and had faith. I don’t want to send the wrong message to my children that quitting is Okay: it’s not. I did this for them. I studied day and night, even on weekends. And the outcome of it all is a blessing. Now I’m attending college. It feels wonderful knowing that I am working toward a great career.”
