SPENCER — A camp Saturday at the Spencer Doll and Toy Museum will teach girls about fashion and modeling.
Museum board member Beth Morris Nance teamed up with Marilyn Lopes to offer the day camp, a press release said.
Lopes created an organization called Discovery Classes for Girls and Young Women to teach young girls and women to be “not just beautiful on the outside, but on the inside,” the press release said.
Lopes was inspired to start her business about three years ago when she coordinated a local fashion show. Basic etiquette, confidence and articulate public speaking are part of what she teaches. Lopes has facilitated summer camps through Salisbury Parks and Recreation the last two years.
Lopes says she even “talks about the hard stuff — including body image. … It’s important for young girls and women to be knowledgeable about fitness, understand their shapes and what it takes to be healthy.”
Nance said in the press release she believes the Discovery Classes “are an excellent complement to the museum and a great way to instill confidence in girls and young women.”
Visitors can see the evolution of fashion by exploring the dolls in the museum, Nance said.
“The dolls and their costumes will provide a broad look at cultures and fashion around the world,” she said.
This Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the museum’s party room will be transformed into a modeling studio. Participating girls will learn fashion, the “beauty walk” and public speaking while participating in an afternoon fashion show. They’ll also learn how to make lip gloss and blush and decorate T-shirts.
The camp is intended for children ages 6-12; a discount is offered for siblings, the press release said. The cost is $25, which includes admission to the museum and lunch. Participants must preregister by Friday by calling the museum at 704-762-9359.
