Area Sports Briefs: Moose scores 32 in Brevard victory

Darius Moose (Carson) lifted Brevard to a 59-56 SAC  basketball win against Lenoir-Rhyne on Sunday by scoring 32 points and pulling down nine rebounds.

Moose is the SAC’s leading scorer.

Will Perry scored 18 for the Bears.

• Tre Williams (Carson) scored 11 points for the Davidson County Community College Storm in a 123-63 win against Tidewater CC.

Women’s basketball

Livingstone won 74-73 at USC Aiken on Saturday night on Precious Roberts’ buzzer-beating 3-pointer.

Livingstone (7-0) rallied  from a 13-point deficit.

Cierra York had 16 rebounds and five assists for the Blue Bears.

Livingstone overcame an amazing performance by Amaura Brandt. She shot 8-for-10 on 3-pointers for the Pacers (4-4).

Prep soccer

The North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association has announced all-region and  All-State teams.

Salisbury’s  Christian Uribe and Carson’s Brandon Flores were named All-State. Both are juniors.

Gray Stone senior  Sandi Jusic was named All-State.

In addition to Uribe and Flores, Salisbury’s Landon Goodman and Michael Brown; Carson’s Colton Correll, Ricky Maldonado and Raunel Vasquez; East Rowan’s Bays Bost and Christian Hester; South Rowan’s Cameron Corriher, and West Rowan’s Austin Morrison were named to all-region teams.

Carson’s Justin Buckwalter was named the regional coach of the year for 3A.

Gray Stone’s Sean Lavook, Alex Irving, Brandon Fortin, David Singletary and Frankie Goodnight were named all-region.

Prep wrestling

Carson won the Mount Pleasant Inviational. Alex Lyles, Cameron Rayfield and Brady Argabright won individual championships.

• South Rowan’s Logan Durham, Patrick Viars and Staley Ashburn were individual champions at Hibriten. Durham was tourney MVP.

• West Rowan (4-2) had three wrestlers place in Saturday’s tournament at St. Stephens. Juwan Houston (132) was third, Zac Ridenhour (145) was third, and Ben Kluttz (16) was second.

The Falcons split a recent tri-meet, beating Concord 72-9 in the SPC but losing to South Iredell on criteria after tying 42-42.

In the match with Concord, Tyler Sywenki (113), Jacob Nicolisi (126), Noah Teeter (138), Corbin Benton (182), Josh McSwain (195), Houston, Ridenhour and Kluttz won by pin. Joe Doll (106), Nathan Sparks (120), Alex Williams (152) and Zach Owen (170)  won by forfeit.

In the match with South Iredell, Sywenki, Houston, Teeter, Ridenhour, Kluttz and Benton had pins. Doll won by forfeit.

The Falcons wrestle at Central Cabarrus Friday.

 

 Local golf

The team of Gordon Preddy-Corey Basinger won the Two-Man Texas Scramble at Warrior. Preddy-Basinger shot 61-68 — 129.

Jason Meadows-Andy Beaver (63-67), Chris Owen-Ken Clarke (61-69) and Michael Dorsett-Keith Dorsett (65-65) finished at 130.

Others in the Championship Flight were Joe Crossen-Blake Wray (67-65 — 132), Brian Jones-Carl Moore (67-68 — 135), Thomas Thompson-Dow Hawkins (64-78 — 142) and Craig Re-Chris Rae (66-77 — 143).

William Little made a hole-in-one on No. 12 on Saturday. He used a 5-iron for his first career ace. He was playing with father Brent Little, uncle Derrick Little and cousin Dalton Little.

Bob Boltz made a hole-in-one on the 162-yard No. 3 hole on Sunday.

It was the second career ace for Boltz, who was playing with Bryan Moore, Bo Elkin and Jeff McCarter.

• Salisbury’s Frank Adams III shot 70-71-73-73 — 287 and finished 1-under in the eGolf Tour’s season-ending Tour Championship held at Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Adams won $2,150.

Sacred Heart hoops

Sacred Heart’s jayvee boys lost to Burlington Christian 26-23. Nick Antosek scored nine points for the Dolphins.

Will Webb scored nine points for the Dolphins in a 27-18 win against Our Lady of  Grace. Ben Childress and Antosek scored five each.

• Sacred Heart’s varsity boys won 44-43 against Our Lady of Mercy. Jack Fisher scored as time expired. Jack Fisher had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Luke Holland scored 14 points. Bill Fisher scored eight, and Spencer Blackwell had seven.

• Mary Sobataka scored 23 points for the Sacred Heart girls in a 34-27 loss to Our Lady of Mercy.

Youth cross country

Four Hurley YMCA Warriors competed in Lawrence, Kansas, at the AAU Cross Country National Championships:

Emma Calvert, 10, finished 20th out of 66 runners in the 9-10 girls division. She ran 12:54 in a 3K.

Eli Julian, 9,  placed ninth in the 9-10 boys division out of 77 runners. He ran 11:38 in a 3K. Noah  Julian, 11, was 51st out of 106 runners in the 11-12 boys division. He ran 11:52 in a 3K.

Hope Julian placed fourth out of six runners in 6-under girls. She ran 5:08 in a 1000-meter race.

Calvert, Eli and Noah Julian, Matthew Burroughs,  Bret Lewis, Nolan Miller and Connor Price  will compete in the USATF  National Championships in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
