The Rowan County District Attorney’s Office will pursue the death penalty against Gary Cureton, who is accused of beating his ex-girlfriend to death with a baseball bat in late January.
Cureton, 54, was charged just hours after Joan Marie Lark, 49, was found by a grandchild in the floor of her downstairs bedroom.
The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office charged Cureton with murder, felony first-degree burglary and felony robbery with a dangerous weapon.
Cureton has been in the Rowan County Detention Center without bond since his January arrest.
Investigators found Cureton at a Kannapolis home wearing Lark’s jacket, with her jewelry in his pockets and dried blood on his clothing.
Cureton has multiple convictions that include assault on a female and domestic criminal trespass.
