From staff reports
World War II veteran Floyd Daugherty, 89, recorded his fifth career hole-in-one on No. 6 at Warrior.
The Landis resident has made those five aces in five different decades.
Daugherty’s playing partner was Hall of Famer Billy Ray Barnes.
Billings’ birthday
Today marks the 84th birthday for former Post sports editor Horace Billings.
Billings’ amazing Hall of Fame career included covering Catawba athletics for 50-plus years, covering a half-century of Masters golf tournaments and participating in the Heisman Trophy voting for 54 years.
And it would’ve been 56 Heisman votes except he was in the army two years during the Korean War.
Billings needed just three years to graduate from High Point College and was hired to replace Scoop McCrary as the sports editor of the Post in 1948 when he was 19. He cast his first Heisman vote that year for Charlie (Choo Choo) Justice, who was nosed out for the honor by Doak Walker.
Billings, who won national awards for coverage of minor league and American Legion baseball, officially “retired” from the Post in 1990 but continued to work part-time for better than a decade.
He was part of the first Salisbury-Rowan Hall of Fame class in 2001.
Prep soccer
Salisbury’s boys soccer team overcame a two-goal halftime deficit and beat Carson 4-3 on Monday at Ludwig Stadium in a rematch of the county championship game.
The Hornets (5-0) trailed the Cougars (2-3) by a 3-1 margin at halftime.
“Big props to Carson for dominating the first half,” Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said. “Big props to our guys for still believing they could come back.”
Bobby Cardelle scored all four goals for the Hornets, including the match-decider with about eight minutes left.
“We made an adjustment in the second half by putting another guy up top, and that created a little more space for Bobby,” Parrish said.
Michael Brown and Clint Comadoll had assists.
Cardelle’s most spectacular goal was on a free kick that he bent around a wall of defenders.
Spencer Dixon, Brock Overcash and keeper Max Fisher led Salisbury’s defense.
Dixon slowed down Carson’s David Garcia, who gave the Hornets fits in the first half.
Fox Correll also was a standout for the Cougars.
Cox Mill beat West Rowan 2-0 on Monday.
Mount Pleasant won 2-0 against South Rowan on Monday.
East Rowan fell to St. Stephens 7-1 on Monday.
Prep volleyball
Carson’s volleyball team beat Davie in Mocksville on Thursday. The Cougars (8-0) won 25-12, 25-7 and 26-24.
Morgan Sessoms had four kills for the War Eagles (1-1).
Kristina Parrish had nine assists and seven digs.
Labor Day golf
The Crowder-Dorsett Labor Day Four-Ball Tournament has been wide open the past two decades.
The tournament has not seen a repeat champion since burly Tom Bullington won back-to-back in 1990 and 1991 with different partners.
Bullington, who was a project manager at Gamewell Mechanical, teamed with Greg Earnhardt, who was on the N.C. State golf team, to win the 1990 final.
When Earnhardt wasn’t able to play in 1991, Bullington and Charles Welch won the event. Welch and his father, Harry, had teamed to win the Labor Day event in 1970.
The last time the same duo won the tournament back-to-back was in 1988-89 when the Isenhours, John Jr. and Tripp, won consecutively.
Prep tennis
Gray Stone’s girls tennis team beat YVC opponents East Montgomery (8-1) and Chatham Central (7-2) to open the season.
The Knights, who finished second in the YVC last season, are ranked third in 1A.
Meg Hedgepeth, Brooke Herlocker, Jordan DeJaco, Caby Styers and Rachel Poston are returning starters, with Libby Fowler added to the starting lineup.
Davie lost 9-0 to Statesville Christian on Monday. See Scoreboard.
Local colleges
Catawba announced it will offer live video streaming of many athletic events this sports year. The streams are through StreamVuTV.
There is no charge at this time. The first events streamed will be on Saturday, Sept. 8, with a soccer doubleheader at noon, followed by the football home opener with Livingstone at p.m.
“We are pleased to be moving into the video streaming world,” athletic director Dennis Davidson said. “This program will not only be great for our out of town alumni and fans, but will be helpful for parents of our student athletes as well. Also, it becomes an additional recruiting tool.”
Catawba SID Jim Lewis and assistant David McDowell got the project started.
After their Friday Night Lights scrimmage, Livingstone’s Blue Bears are turning their focus to the Sept. 1 home opener against Chowan.
“I was pleased with our performance,” coach Elvin James said. “Defense picked it up in the second half, and I’m impressed with how they moved to the ball.”
Livingstone-Chowan kickoff is at 6 p.m.
“We had a very difficult, tough camp,” said Livingstone returner/receiver Terry Anderson. “Against Chowan, I’m expecting big things from my team mates — it’s time to release the Blue Bear.”

The Pre-Rowan County Meet will be held on Wednesday at Dan Nicholas Park.
Minor leagues
Kane County’s Rudy Brown (South Rowan) made his first start of the season on Monday. Brown pitched three shutout innings. He struck out six, walked one and allowed four hits.
