West Rowan’s jayvees beat Salisbury 24-15 on Thursday and ended the Hornets’ 17-game winning streak.
West’s defense shut out the Hornets in the second half.
Kreshon Alexander’s running and Shakir Simmons’ receiving paced the Falcons.
A.J. Hill scored both Salisbury TDs and had a two-point conversion. Matt Woolly kicked a PAT. Riley Myers played well at QB.
Canned goods drive
West coach Scott Young said the Falcons are holding a canned food drive in honor of Cody Rives and Terry Johnson, the West students who were killed in an accident on Monday. Young urged everyone attending tonight’s Salisbury-West game to bring canned goods. West also has declared the game a “Red Out” to honor the students. Young said that even though the Falcons are playing Salisbury, he asks West fans to wear red.
Rocky River 14, A.L. Brown 12
A.L. Brown’s jayvee team also had a win streak dating back to 2010 ended on Thursday.
Safety Tyree Williams led Brown’s defense. R.J. Fowler (10 carries, 69 yards) led the offense.
North Rowan 12, East Rowan 0
Omar Lipscomb, Zeth Robinson and Jake Pritchard led North’s defense.
Tyquarious Corpening scored both TDs and rushed 24 times for 134 yards.
In other jayvee scores, Northwest Cabarrus made a goal-line stand late and beat South Rowan 28-20. North Rowan beat East Rowan 12-0.

PREP BASKETBALL
Carson senior guard Kelly Dulkoski has given a verbal commitment to Kennesaw State, a Division I school in Georgia.
Dulkoski has been all-county the past two seasons.
She averaged 11.7 points as a sophomore and led the Cougars with 16.3 ppg as a junior.
Dulkoski had a high game of 32 points last season.
Dulkoski was named Rowan County Athlete of the Year for the 2011-12 school year.

Dulkoski-Hepler, Lentz-Isenhour and Cozart-Gantt teamed for doubles victories.
In the win against South, Dulkoski, Hepler, Lentz, Cozart and Isenhour won in singles for the Cougars.
Sara Bradley won for the Raiders.

East wins
East Rowan defeated North Iredell 9-0 in an NPC match on Wednesday.
Singles winners for the Mustangs were Lizzie Weaver, Rebecca Agner, Laura Agner, Hannah Pressley, Drew Pethel and Jasmine Cooper.
Weaver-Rebecca Wagner, Laura Agner-Pressley and Pethel-Cooper were the winning doubles teams.

Ninety-nine GARS members played a Texas Scramble at The Club at Irish Creek.
The team of Jay Boyce, Tommy Seamon, Bobby Whitesides and Gary Wortman tied for first at minus-5 with the team of John Cress, Jan Kichefski, Frank Rowell and Mick Rowell.
The team of Harry DeVlieger, Kent Houghton, Les Loman and Scott Miller shot minus-4 and tied the team of Don Bishop, Bob Stepanian, Bobby Wagoner and Dave Wilson for second place.
Country Club
Jo Shaw won the women’s “Nine Point” event at the Country Club of Salisbury with 58 points.
Jayne Hubbard was second with 54, while Blanche Glover took third with 50.MOTOCROSS
The National ATV Motocross Series finished up in western Tennessee with local racer Grayson Eller earning three top five overall finishes.
Eller competes in three different classes and travels the entire national series.
The 10-race circuit starts in March in Georgia and makes stops throughout the U.S. including Michigan, Illionis, Pennsylvania, New York, Kentucky, Ohio and Maryland.
Eller took overall wins in Georgia and New York and finished out the series with third, fourth and fourth places in the national standings.
The eighth-grader and attends Erwin Middle School.

INTIMIDATORS
First-round draft pick Courtney Hawkins’ stay in Kannapolis was brief.
Hawkins, the 18-year-old Texas High School Player of the Year, appeareed in 16 games with Kannapolis and batted .308 with four homers and 15 RBIs.
The Intimidators lost 5-4 to Greenville on Wednesday in 10 innings and fell 4-2 to the Drive on Thursday.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
Catawba lost 1-0 in overtime against Palm Beach Atlantic on Thursday in a season opener.
The match was part of the Flagler Kickoff Tournament.
Athena Bless and Mary Kirkman had two shots on goal each for the Indians.
Angelica Pawlowski had four saves.

VOLLEYBALL
At the Preseason Spike Down Tournament held in Salisbury, the Cabarrus Stallions went 5-0 and finished first .
The Greensboro Panthers won the jayvee division.
Anna Messisco of the Stallions was tournament MVP.
Also on the all-tournament team were North Hills’ Candace-Craig Lyerly and Natalie Whicker, Emily Messisco of the Stallions and Sheets Memorial’s Laura Blinson and Natalie Wilson.
Cabarrus’ Kayla Funderburk made the jayvee all-tournament team.

SA SOCCER
Salisbury Academy, coached by Catawba Hall of Famer Tom Sexton, beat Concordia 4-2.
Andreas Kalogeromitros scored on a cross by Ellen Simons, and Carter Cook assisted on Kalogeromitros’ second goal for a 2-1 halftime lead.
Kalogeromitros scored his third goal on a cross by Simons, and Cook closed the scoring from the left corner on a pass by Kalogeromitros.
Drew Shelby got his victory in goal.Marcus Corry stood out as a marking back, and Garrett Shermer, Ruth Clement and Adam Drye had solid defensive games.PREP SOCCER
Catawba’s men’s socce team opened with a 2-1 win at Francis Marion on Thursday.
Corey Faughnan netted the game-winner in the 70th minute on a cross by Matt Gallagher.
Valentin Nava (Carson) scored the other goal for the Indians. Kenny Bonilla (Salisbury) assisted.
Evan Harvey had four saves.
Each team got off eight shots. Catawba withstood a dozen corners, while the Indians had eight corners.
