Area sports briefs: A.L. Brown climbs to top of state 3A poll

A.L. Brown is ranked first in Tuesday’s edition of the 3A state poll and West Rowan is ranked sixth.
Both squads are 3-0 entering Friday’s games. West is at North Rowan and Brown hosts Hickory Ridge.The Debbie Barrier Plummer Benefit Golf Tournament will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Corbin Hills. There is a $50 entry fee and hole sponsors are available for $100. All checks should be made payable to Bethel Lutheran Church. Proceeds will go toward the medical expenses of Plummer, who was diagnosed with Cholangiocarcinoma cancer in Nov. 2009. • Nick Lyerly won the National Junior Golf Tour National Championship 12-13 age division held at The Pearl Golf Links in Sunset Beach NC. Lyerly won a sudden death playoff on the 5th extra hole after shooting rounds of 71-79-150.Sacred Heart defeated Hickory Christian 5-0 Tuesday. Michael Childress, Justin Boyd and William Austin had first-half goals and Boyd and Austin added tallies in the second. Erin Turnball, Melvin Bonilla and Annie Habeeb had assists for SH.
“It was a great way to start the season,” Sacred Heart coach Daniel Scullion said.Davie defeated West Davidson 3-1 Tuesday. The War Eagles dropped the first game 25-19 before winning 25-23, 25-22, 25-23.
Ann Marie Jones had a team-high 11 kills
• The Cabarrus Stallions came back from down 0-2 to defeat Covenant Classical in five sets. Emily Messisco had 17 digs and 19 serves. Kendyl Parker finished with six kills and Karley Long had four blocks.
• West Rowan’s varsity team defeated East Rowan in straight sets Tuesday. East ‘s Jayvee team defeated West 2-1.Rowan County Special Olympic athlete Cedric Drye will participate in the Special Olympics Golf National Invitational in Glendale, AZ. Drye and coach Ted Oglesby will fly out to Glendale Thursday.The JF Hurley YMCA is holding registration for fall soccer and flag football until Sept. 9.
