Area sports briefs: Livingstone player repeats honor

Livingstone quarterback Drew Powell repeated as the CIAA Rookie of the Week.
Powell threw for 305 yards and one touchdown and rushed for 65 yards and a TD in a 49-17 loss to Catawba.
Livingstone is home on Saturday against Edward Waters at 1 p.m.
• Catawba defensive back Jumal Rolle was named SAC Special Teams Player of the Week. Rolle was credited with blocking a punt and a field-goal attempt in the Indians’ win against Livingstone.
• Wingate QB Robbie Nallenweg was honored as SAC Offensive Player of the Week.
Nallenweg threw for four TDs in a 37-9 romp against Albany State.
• Appalachian State QB Jamal Jackson was named SoCon Player of the Week after accounting for 325 yards in the 35-27 win against Montana.Local golfThe McCanless Couples played on Sunday with a four-man Captain’s Choice format.
The winning team was Don Goodnight, Ricky Honeycutt and Treva Honeycutt.
The team of Sharon Miller, Tim Earnhardt, Frank Foster and Susan Houston placed second.
David Huneycutt won closest to the pin on No. 3. Ricky Honeycutt won longest putt on No. 8.Youth trackSixteen athletes, ages 6-14, are competing in cross country for the Hurley Y’s Warriors.
Julianna Evans (RCCC early college) won the 14-under age group at the Sunset BB&T 5k downtown run. She ran 25:27.
Aubree Cain (North Rowan Middle) placed second in 27:16.
North Middle’s Coby Weant (23:20) and Southeast’s Jonah Evans(23:23) also competed in the Sunset event, along with Hurley Elementary’s Jaxon Evans (31:29).
Proceeds benefited the United Way.
•In the big XC Invitational held at Cannon School,Andrew Burgess ran for West Rowan Middle and was third out of 272 entries. His time was 12:20 on a tough , two-mile course.

Coach Kristen Harmon earned her first victory.

Elizabeth Ann Graeber led the defense for the Dolphins, Carolyn Conway and Abigail Lund led the offense, and Lexy Smith served five aces.Middle school tennisSalisbury Academy’s girls won 9-0 against Sacred Heart .
Maria Capito, Juliana Anderson, Annabel Barr, Ruth Clement, Ivy Overcash and Jordan McCall won in singles.
Capito-Barr, Clement-McCall and Anderson-Overcash were winning doubles teams.Girls high school tennisSouth Rowan won 7-2 against Statesville in an NPC match.
Erin Freeze, Bethaney Karriker, Aspen Musala, Madison Brewer and Sara Bradley won in singles for the Raiders.
Cox-Musala and Bradley-Taylor James collected doubles wins.
• Salisbury cruised to a 9-0 CCC win against Lexington.
Katelyn Storey, Sallie Kate Meyerhoeffer, Madeline Hoskins, Kayla Honeycutt, Kathryn Rusher and Grace Steinman won in singles.
Alexandra Drye-Meyerhoffer, Storey-Anna Flynn and Emily Capito-Katheen Mowery won doubles. Salisbury (8-2, 3-0) won its 117th consecutive league match.
• Davie lost to R.J. Reynolds 6-3 in a CPC match.
Allie Billings, Laura Kinder and Ashley Dowell won singles matches for the War Eagles.Minor leaguesKeegan Linza (North Rowan) finished his season in Great Falls with a 5-3 record. In 79 innings, Linza struck out 57 and walked only six.
