WINSTON-SALEM — Davie County’s Cade Carney didn’t own the spotlight for a change. That wasn’t a bad thing.   
Make no mistake. Carney had no letup in his stirring freshman season, rushing for 158 yards in less than three quarters of action in Davie’s 46-6 body-slam of host Reynolds in last night’s Central Piedmont Conference opener. But Devon Parks had a monster game, stealing the spotlight by scoring four touchdowns in three different ways and playing stellar run-support from his safety position.
Parks scored on an 80-yard punt return, two rushes and a 79-yard interception return.
While the Demons fell to 4-3 overall, Davie (6-1) won its fifth straight. It has manhandled opponents 132-26 during the run.
“Well, that’s the athlete we think he can be,” Davie coach Doug Illing said of Parks. “We try to use him everywhere we can, and he’s living up to every expectation that we have of him.”
Davie was missing eight players to injury or suspension, including running back Stephon Smoot. Parks spelled Carney occasionally, rushing for 59 yards on eight carries as Davie cakewalked to a 46-0 lead before Reynolds scored late.
 Carney only needed 9 yards to reach 1,000, and he eclipsed the mark on his second carry, becoming just the second War Eagle to reach 1,000 in the first seven games. Cooter Arnold did it twice (2003-04). And Carney averaged 9.8 yards per carry despite a turf-toe injury.  
“Oh, yeah. Definitely,” Illing said when asked if Carney was less than full strength. “He’s got a plate in the bottom of his shoe, and it’s going to take a lot of time to heal.”
An encouraging sign was the efficiency of QB Parker Correll, who responded with his biggest passing-yardage game in four weeks, going 4 of 6 for 99 yards. He tossed 28- and 62-yard TDs to Johnathan Wiseman.    
“They’re going to crowd the box on us, and we’re going to have to sneak in the vertical pass when we can,” Illing said.
The defense did its part, too. Jamal Lackey and Sam Nesbit combined on a sack. Outside linebacker Andy Lewis broke up two passes. Parks made beautiful one-on-one tackles on the edge. Lackey tormented quarterback Bailey Tyner repeatedly, forcing him to hurry throws that resulted in miserable numbers for Tyner (2 of 11, 6 yards). Lackey also blocked a punt.
Davie didn’t get the shutout it craved, but it hasn’t allowed more than seven points during its winning streak.
“They’ve got a passion to really get after people and swarm,” Illing said. “They don’t want people to gain a yard.”
