Bobby Cardelle had a hat trick, including a golden goal in the fourth overtime period, as Salisbury’s soccer team survived 4-3 against Surry Central in Saturday’s second-round 2A playoff game.
“Just a crazy, amazing game,” Salisbury soccer coach Matt Parrish said. “We were a lot bigger than them, but they were a lot faster than us. We’re a fast team, but they were one of the fastest we’ve ever seen.”
Salisbury trailed 1-0 just 50 seconds into the match.
Salisbury tied the game at 1-1 off a corner, with Philip Simons setting up Cardelle.
Clint Comadoll started the game, but he was dinged-up and laboring after Friday’s football effort, so Parrish pulled him and sat him for long minutes. He decided to reinsert him with the Hornets down 2-1 and getting desperate, and Comadoll scored the goal that leveled the match. Again, Simons assisted.
A remarkable goal put the Hornets up 3-2 in the first overtime. Emmy Turcios heel-flicked a pass to a speeding Cardelle, who produced his second goal. But Surry Central answered with the equalizer, and the second and third overtimes were scoreless.
Late in the fourth OT, the match appeared headed to a penalty-kick shootout, but SHS converted off another corner. With his back to the goal, Cardelle was able to settle a rocket off the foot of Luke Hutton, and he drilled his 38th goal into the side netting.
Salisbury (18-2-1) will play Trinity at home on Tuesday or Wednesday.

College football
Livingstone was hammered 57-6 by Johnson C. Smith in the Commemorative Classic in Charlotte on Saturday.
The Blue Bears (2-8, 2-5 CIAA) scored in the second quarter on a 9-yard run by Terril Gourdine to cut J.C. Smith’s lead to 14-6, but the Golden Bulls (6-4, 5-2) then scored 43 unanswered points.
Drew Powell threw for 184 yards for the Blue Bears and rushed for 77.
Dedric Anderson rushed for 200 yards and three TDs for the Golden Bulls. Keahn Wallace threw for 223 yards and two TDs.

Prep cross countryEast Rowan’s boys cross country team finished 11th in the 3A state championship meet held at Kernersville’s Beeson Park.
Sophomore Conor Honeycutt led the Mustangs. He was 51st in 17:06. Other times for East were Jason Basso (17:26), Graham Lyerly (17:28), Jason Troutman (17:39), Cal Meyers (17:42), Justin Allen (17:44) and Chance Brown (18:37).
Carson individuals Kyle Gillis (22nd, 16:37), a junior, and Zachary Marchinko (24th, 16:38), a freshman, had strong showings. Marchinko had the best time of any 3A freshman.
? A.L. Brown freshman Kelsie Simpson was timed in 20:33 in the 3A girls meet and finished 55th.
? Davie’s Anna McBride (18:19) was 11th in 4A.
? Led by Caroline McLeod (14th, 20:35), Rebecca Brickner (20:46) and Sarah Goodnight (20:58), Gray Stone’s girls placed fourth in 1A.
? Gray Stone’s boys team finished 10th in 1A.
?Team state championships were won by Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons (3A boys and girls), Kernersville Bishop McGuinness (1A boys and girls), Carrboro (2A girls), North Lincoln (2A boys), Cary Green Hope (4A girls) and Raleigh Broughton (4A boys).

Prep tennis
Mount Airy won the 1A state title with a 5-0 victory against Science and Math.
? Raleigh Broughton won 5-1 against Greensboro Grimsley for the 4A title.
? Charlotte Catholic beat Nash Central 5-3 for the 3A state championship.

Prep volleyball
Charlotte Ardrey Kell beat Raleigh Leesville Road 3-0 for the 4A state title on Saturday.
?North Surry beat South Granville 3-2 for the 2A crown.
? Hendersonville beat Raleigh Charter 3-0 for the 1A state championship.

Middle school football
China Grove’s seventh-graders beat Corriher-Lipe 32-26 in three overtimes.
Steven Amaya scored the winning points on a 7-yard run.
Amaya also scored on a 5-yard run and passed to Michael Early for a two-point conversion.
Early had a 10-yard scoring run for the Red Devils, and Dylan Severt had two 1-yard TD runs.
Leading the China Grove defense were Early, Severt, Amaya, Sawyer Smallwood, Josh Sifford and Tyler Beasley.
? China Grove won the eighth-grade game against the Yellow Jackets 32-0.
Malin Vickers (22 yards), Donuvan Hopewell (77 yards), Cameron Rayfield (12 yards) and Koby Campbell (7 yards) had rushing TDs.
Cole Howard kicked four PATs.
Defensive standouts for the Red Devils include Vickers, Christian Rape, Nathan Yow, Isaac Bell, Austin Chrismon and Austin Cain.Cain intercepted a pass. Yow blocked a punt that was recovered by Jacob Gulley.
