Salisbury’s Katelyn Storey and Anna Flynn finished second to Brevard’s Taylor Snowden and Emma McLeod Saturday in the State Individual tennis 2A doubles final in Cary.
Snowden/McLeod won 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 after topping Sallie Kate Meyerhoeffer/Alexandra Drye in the semifinal
“We knew coming in that they were the team that was the most talented,” Salisbury coach Chris Myers said.
Storey made the final for the third consecutive time. She was the runner up in singles in 2010 and 2011.
Salisbury took a 3-2 lead in the first set before Brevard had a late surge. The Hornets controlled the second set and gained momentum. After a 10-minute break between sets, Snowden/McLeod took charge.
“It was very competitive,” Myers said. “Just about every game could have gone either way. The first two sets were high-quality tennis.”
“The Brevard team played very aggressively. They jumped on us in the third set and by the time we got our bearings in us again it was too late.”
Salisbury (18-2) plays Cuthbertson at home Monday in the third round of the dual team playoffs. Myers said Kathryn Rusher will fill in for Madeline Hoskins, who will be at the 1A/2A golf championship in Pinehurst. A win there would put the Hornets against the Shelby/Brevard winner on Wednesday. Brevard had five players in the individual championships. The Hornets, who’ve won four consecutive 2A state titles, had all six players make it for the third straight year. The state championships are Saturday in Burlington.
