World AIDS Day concert

‘The Parchman Hour’
CONCORD — “The Parchman Hour,” a riveting Civil Rights drama filled with music and dance, will be presented at the Davis Theatre Saturday, Dec. 1, at 8 p.m.

Created by acclaimed actor and playwright Mike Wiley, the production is presented in the style of the variety show of yesteryear complete with music, dance, drama and humor, retelling the story of the Freedom Riders of 1961, an interracial group of civil rights activists who rode interstate buses into the segregated South. Riders were arrested and, instead of posting bail, chose to serve their time at one of the most brutal prisons in the South, Parchman Farm in Mississippi. To keep their spirits up, the prisoners invented a radio program.

Old Stone House Christmas tickets on sale

It’s time to get your tickets to Rowan Museum’s 28th annual German Christmas Celebration at the Old Stone House (1766) on Stone House Road in Granite Quarry. The house is closed November through March, but opens for this popular holiday celebration the weekend just following Christmas, Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 29 and 30 — from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, and noon-4 p.m. on Sunday.

The Old Stone House will be decorated as it would have been during pre-Revolutionary days. Guides in period costumes will be on site, and guests will enjoy learning about customs and participating in crafts, musket firing, woodworking, weaving, candle making, open fire cooking with lots of samples, music, children’s games, goats and chickens and much more.

Holly sprigs will be available for all to toss into the fire to burn their troubles away for the year, looking forward to a new year.

A golden Christmas
MIDLAND — Tale a candlelight tour during the day at Reed Gold Mine, on Dec. 1 from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. and Dec. 8 and 15 from 6-8:30 p.m.

Special tours are given by costumed interpreters . Tours focus on the miners who were working and how they would have celebrated the holidays, including the Germanic origins of our modern celebrations. The tour will also include Cornish and Scotch Irish traditions, as these cultures were also represented in the area. Guests will enjoy refreshments and music by local choirs while craftsmen display their quilting, lace, toy making, and other talents.

This year’s event is a partnership with Cooperative Christian Ministries. On Dec. 8 and 15, from 6-8:30 p.m., is a special reception with refreshments and hors d’oeuvres, a screening of “A Garfield Christmas” and special lantern tours around the site and underground mine. Reservations are requested for these evening activities. All proceeds and food donations go to CCM. Thanks to local sponsors, this event is free of charge.
