This year’s event will be held Sunday, Dec. 2, from 1-4 p.m. in the Messinger Room of the Rowan Museum. The cost is $35 per child (which includes attached adult) for decorating a gingerbread house, a photo with Santa, tours of the Museum and refreshments.

Created by acclaimed actor and playwright Mike Wiley, the production is presented in the style of the variety show of yesteryear complete with music, dance, drama and humor, retelling the story of the Freedom Riders of 1961, an interracial group of civil rights activists who rode interstate buses into the segregated South. Riders were arrested and, instead of posting bail, chose to serve their time at one of the most brutal prisons in the South, Parchman Farm in Mississippi. To keep their spirits up, the prisoners invented a radio program.

The Gold Hill tour of homes is on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 3-7 p.m. for $12 per person (children under 6 free). Trolley transportation to each stop included in the ticket price, which are available to purchase from the merchants in Gold Hill Village or can be ordered by mail and picked up at the Arbor on Dec. 8. Lexington
The Charity League of Lexington’s 53rd Holiday House is Nov. 30-Dec.1, featuring a home which survived the Civil War. The home, which was built in 1834 by Dr. William Rainey Holt and is on the Historic Register, is located at 408 S. Main St. in Lexington. It will be open Friday, Nov. 30 from 9:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. from 1 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. For ticket information, call the Charity League at 336-239-7960.
Albemarle
From 2-6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9, visit historic homes and businesses in the third annual Albemarle Holiday Tour of Homes. All proceeds go toward the Albemarle Downtown Development Corporation Design Committee, www.albemarledowntown.com/eventsIt’s time to get your tickets to Rowan Museum’s 28th annual German Christmas Celebration at the Old Stone House (1766) on Stone House Road in Granite Quarry. The house is closed November through March, but opens for this popular holiday celebration the weekend just following Christmas, Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 29 and 30 – from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, and noon-4 p.m. on Sunday.
The Old Stone House will be decorated as it would have been during pre-Revolutionary days…very simply with natural greenery, dried flowers, herbs, fruits and berries. Guides in period costumes will be on site, and guests will enjoy learning about customs and participating in crafts, musket firing, woodworking (benches, bowls and spoons), weaving, candle making, open fire cooking with lots of samples, music, children’s games, goats and chickens and much more.
Holly sprigs will be available for all to toss into the fire to burn their troubles away for the year, looking forward to a new year.

The house is located one half mile down Old Stone House Road off Highway 52 in Granite Quarry.MIDLAND – Tale a candlelight tour during the day at Reed Gold Mine, on Dec. 1 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Dec. 8 and 15 from 6-8:30 p.m.
Special tours are given by costumed interpreters . Tours focus on the miners who were working and how they would have celebrated the holidays, including the Germanic origins of our modern celebrations. The tour will also include Cornish and Scotch Irish traditions, as these cultures were also represented in the area. Guests will enjoy refreshments and music by local choirs while craftsmen display their quilting, lace, toy making, and other talents.
This year’s event is a partnership with Cooperative Christian Ministries. On Dec. 8 and 15, from 6-8:30 p.m., is a special reception with refreshments and hors d’oeuvres, a screening of “A Garfield Christmas” in the auditorium, and special lantern tours around the site and underground mine. Reservations are requested for these evening activities. All proceeds and food donations go to CCM. Thanks to local sponsors, this event is free of charge.
