Sacred Heart Catholic School’s pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, first and second grade classes had a lesson in fire safety and prevention from Salisbury Fire Station No. 4.
Firefighter Sebastian, Firefighter Clark, Engineer Moon and Captain Spry were quick to teach the students what to do and what not to do in a fire emergency.
First and foremost, if possible, call 911. Sebastian acted out what a 911 call would sound like, making sure the students knew that they must say their name and the address.
He also instructed the students on what to do if a fire broke out in their house, telling them to “stop, drop and roll”
Second grader, Hunter Gibson, showed the students exactly how.
One very important lesson that the firefighters stressed was that the students should never hide in a fire. They told them to yell, so that when the firefighters arrived, they could quickly find them.
Sebastian also told the students to practice their fire drills at home with their parents. Everyone should have an escape plan to get out of the house if there is a fire. He emphasized that students should feel the door to see if it is hot and stay low to the ground while escaping. If there is a window nearby, open it and crawl out if they can.
Finally, the student got to see a fully-dressed firefighter. They were told to never be scared of a firefighter because they were there to help them.
The students also took a tour of the fire truck, as Sebastian explained all the important parts and tools.
