The Rowan-Salisbury and Kannapolis City school systems will remain closed Tuesday, and Rowan-Salisbury students will go to school on a Saturday to make up one of the days.
Classes have been canceled a second straight day due to a winter storm that moved into the area early today. In Rowan-Salisbury, it is a one-hour delay for staff and an optional workday for teachers.
Rowan-Salisbury students will attend classes on Friday, Jan. 21 and Saturday, Jan. 22 to make up the days, the school system announced this evening.
Kannapolis students will make up their snow days on Feb. 18 and Feb. 21.
Salisbury Academy, Catawba College and Rowan-Cabarrus Community College have also announced classes are canceled Tuesday.
The storm closed local schools, government offices and businesses today.
And conditions could be worse Tuesday morning, if freezing rain begins to fall on up to 8 inches of snow as predicted.
Gov. Bev Perdue has declared a state of emergency for all of North Carolina.
“Once again, we have a winter storm that will impact almost the entire state with some type of frozen precipitation,” Perdue said in a press release. “We know travel will be hazardous this afternoon and into Tuesday, so we’re urging everyone be safe. Don’t take any unnecessary risks if you don’t have to and exercise caution if you must travel.”

School system officials were meeting late this morning to decide whether to cancel classes Tuesday and when students will make up the days missed.
Kannapolis City Schools is closed, as are Sacred Heart Catholic School, Rockwell Christian School and Salisbury Academy.
Livingstone College is closed today. Catawba College is open today but has canceled evening classes. Rowan Cabarrus Community College has canceled day and evening classes.
Other closings or altered schedules that have been reported to the Post:
• The Rowan Regional Medical Center Community Hospice meeting that was planned for tonight at Milford Baptist Church is canceled.
• Salisbury city offices are closed today. City officials will decide early Tuesday whether to close again.
• Rowan County courts are closed, but the courthouse and Sheriff’s Office administrative offices are open for business. Courts will open tomorrow at 10 a.m., and court will be in session at 10:30 a.m.
• The Rowan County Chamber of Commerce office is closed and all business events, including Business After Hours, have been canceled.
• The East Rowan Y is closed today.
• Cabarrus County government offices are closed
• Kannapolis city offices are closed and tonight’s City Council meeting is cancelled. Garbage pickup is canceled today in Kannapolis.
• The Cabarrus County Board of Education meeting has been canceled. It will be held Friday at 8:30 a.m.
• Cabarrus County Transportation Services is providing public transportation van service only for life-sustaining trips to health care providers.
• The Cabarrus Animal Protection and Preservation Advisory Committee meeting is cancelled.
Rowan residents woke up to snow on the ground and it is still falling today, as a winter storm moved into the area overnight.
The National Weather Service predicts 2 to 4 inches of snow will fall today and that an additional 2 to 4 inches will fall overnight tonight.
After 5 a.m. Tuesday, freezing drizzle and sleet will mix in with the snow, the Weather Service predicts, but as of 12:40 the agency’s forecast said there is “little or no ice accumulation expected.”
Even so, the Weather Service advises only traveling in an emergency. If you must travel, take along a cell phone and wear a warm coat, gloves and boots. Keep a blanket, flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
