A Rowan County Sheriff’s deputy working private security at a party at VFW Post 3006, 1200 Brenner Ave., Saturday night helped put a convicted felon behind bars.
Deputy Jagger Naves, working a secondary employment duty at the VFW, was standing in front of the building and noticed someone walking between vehicles. The man crouched down between cars for several seconds, then stood back up and entered the building.
Naves decided to investigate, and found a blue Nike bag resting on the top of a tire on a car, and when he picked it up, he noticed it was heavy and had a metallic sound.
“He immediately thought it could be weapons,” the report stated.
Naves’ intuition was right, and he found a MAC-10 submachine gun and a MAC-10 magazine with ammunition.
Naves went inside, found the man who he thought had left the bag, and discovered the bag did belong to him, and he was a convicted felon.
John Cletis Jackson Jr., 23, of 603 W. Horah St., was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and given a $25,000 secured bond.
Jackson has a criminal record in Rowan County dating back to 2006, including charges of assault on a female, possession of a concealed weapon and drug charges.
