Josephus III and Jeremy Vess will perform at the Rowan Arts Council’s Rhythm Night tonight from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Rail Walk Gallery, 413 N. Lee Street.
Vess is well-known throughout our region as a guitarist, songwriter and solo artist. The winner of Rowan Arts Council’s Rehn Accoustic Music Grant, he recently released an EP, “Feather in the Wind.” His recordings were done locally in collaboration with producer Jerod Jacobs. He’ll talk about elements involved in the song-writing process and offer suggestions to those who would like to learn to compose their own songs.
Josephus III is from Greensboro and has received several grants from the NC Arts Council. He is a spoken word artist whose poetry has been blended with soulful sounds and vivacious vocals. His music reaches a worldwide audience in the categories of R&B, NeoSoul, Pop, Hip-Hop, and Jazz, but perphaps “Soul Poetry” is the best way to describe his work.
Josephus is often accompanied on stage by dancers, singers and musicians that help tap the rhythm of life and bring new meaning and understanding to his words. After making a name for himself in North Carolina, his following has grown over the years and he has toured throughout the southeastern U.S. and performed in Australia. He’s performed in theaters, clubs, museums, galleries, universities, corporate settings and stage productions.
His new album, “Poetry is Life,” scheduled to be released in the spring, is a concept album that embodies everything he is as an artist and will appeal to young and old.
The evening will conclude with an open mic forum for poets to share original poetry. A sign-up sheet will be at the door for poets who wish to perform.
