China Grove wrestler Alex Lyles has won five tournaments this year.
Lyles was the champion at 215 pounds in the Rowan County Middle School Tournament held at China Grove on Saturday.
He recently won the open state championship held at Davie and also won a Christmas tournament at North Rowan and tournaments held at Thomasville and Mebane. Heís won two events while wrestling in the 250-pound class.
Lyles is 34-0 this season and has given up only six total points in all those matches.
n Erwin wrestlers, coached by former East Rowan standout Aaron Plyler, finished second in Saturdayís conference tournament.
Brady Argabright and Marshall Shank won championships for the Eagles while Robert Barringer, Justin Coe and Bryant Godsey had second-place finishes.
n Play continues in the middle school basketball tournament today with semifinals at Southeast.
Erwinís top-seeded boys play Corriher-Lipe at 4:30 p.m., and Knoxís top-seeded girls meet China Grove at 6 p.m.
n Jayvee girls basketball
Salisburyís jayvee girls basketball team rolled 49-18 against West Davidson on Saturday.
Patreece Lattimore scored 17 points for the Hornets (9-0, 3-0 CCC). Monifa Angle had nine points, and Daterria Connor scored eight.
n Sacred Heart hoops
Sacred Heartís varsity girls beat Hickory Christian 50-43 at the Boyd Dolphin Tank.
Erin Ansbro had 23 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and seven steals to lead the Dolphins (16-5, 4-0).
Meghan Hedgepeth added 10 points, six assists, five rebounds and five steals. Annie Habeeb had seven points. Caroline Parrott had seven reboards and Breya Philpot had five.
n Sacred Heartís boys rallied from a halftime deficit and topped Hickory Christian 34-30 in overtime.
Spencer Storey hit a key 3-pointer during the rally.
Max Fisher hit three 3-pointers to lift his season total to 43. He scored 12 points.
Christian Hester had 11 points, 12 rebounds and five block shots. Chili Chilton added seven points, including the go-ahead basket in OT.
The Dolphins travel to Conover for a league double header on Tuesday.
n College commitments
South Rowanís Caleb OíNeal has signed with Southern Wesleyanís cross country program.
n South Rowan second baseman Jacob Dietz has verbally committed to Belmont Abbeyís baseball program.
n Northwest Cabarrus left-hander Rob Bain, who has lots of family ties to Rowan County, has verbally committed to Davidsonís baseball program.
Bain is one of the nominees for Greater Charlotte Pitcher of the Year. That award will be announced Feb. 5.

n Hurley Y basketball
A boys basketball league for ages 5-14 starts in February at Hurley YMCA.
Games will be played in February and March. There will be a coaches meeting this Friday at 6 p.m. in the Y conference room.

n China Grove sign-ups
China Grove youth baseball and softball registrations will start on Jan. 19 at Daleís Sporting Goods.
Registration lasts through Feb. 26.
Baseball fees are $40 for Coach Pitch (ages 5-6); $50 for Coach Pitch (ages 7-8); $50 for Junior Division (ages 9-10); and $50 for Senior Division (ages 11-12).
Softball fee is $45 for Coach Pitch (ages 6-9) or Senior Division (ages 10-14).
League age is as of April 30, 2011.

Pfeifferís menís volleyball team opened the season by going 3-1 at the Hampton Inn & Sleep Inn tourney.
