The Rowan-Salisbury School System announces the window of opportunity for parents requesting to transfer their child to attend a school outside of their attendance zone.
It is the intent of the Board of Education that students attend the school that serves their residence. Exceptions to this may be made in limited circumstances.
Student transfers and school choice
Parents wishing to request a transfer for their child to attend school outside of their assigned attendance area may do so by completing the appropriate request forms and submitting them during the transfer period from March 1 until April 15. The forms are available at the districtí website, www.rss.k12.nc.us by clicking on the ěSpring Transfer Window.î Forms are also available at schools and at the Long Street Administrative Office.
In addition to regular transfer requests, the Board of Education created three school choice zones.
Any student in Rowan County may attend North Rowan High School as a choice school.
Next, rising ninth graders on the section of N.C. 150 encompassing the Summerfield, Windmill Ridge, Hidden Hut, and Glen Heather subdivisions may choose to attend Salisbury High instead of West Rowan High.
Rising ninth-graders in the Grace Church to Millers Chapel area and the Spring Valley and Cress School Road areas may attend South Rowan High instead of Carson.
Transportation is provided for students attending North, Salisbury or South Rowan high schools under the provisions of school choice.
There is no athletic wait period for students who reside in a choice zone who choose to attend a choice school. Older siblings of rising ninth-grade students in the Salisbury or South Rowan choice zones will be allowed to attend that choice school without an athletic wait period.
High schoolacademies
Rising ninth-grade students that are unable to obtain academies or concentrations at their regularly assigned school, may apply to another school within the district in order to enroll in a program of study or academy not offered. Transfers into high school academies for rising ninth-graders will be granted on a space available basis, with students in the academy host school given first opportunity for enrollment in the academy.
Rowan Salisbury Schools offers high school academies in the following four areas:
Science and math at Salisbury High
Agriculture at West Rowan High
Fine arts at Jesse Carson High
JROTC at South Rowan High
