Davie’s baseball team used a nine-run fifth inning to beat West Rowan 11-1 on Tuesday at Rich Park.
Steven Crandall hit a homer for the Falcons’ run.
West pitcher Madison Osborne limited the War Eagles (4-1) to three hits until they exploded in the fifth inning to win by the 10-run rule.
Corey Randall hit a two-run homer for Davie. Carson Herndon had two doubles. Randall, Connor Bodenhamer and Alex Newman had two hits each to back strong pitching by Joe Watson. Watson fanned 10.
“Osborne pitched a good game, baffled us for a long time and kept West in the game until we had the big inning,” Davie coach Mike Herndon said.
A.L. Brown held off Central Cabarrus 12-9 for its first SPC win.
Catcher Ryan Blackmon (3-for-3) had a monster game for the Wonders, totaling seven RBIs with a three-run homer, a solo homer, a two-run single and a bases-loaded walk.
Dylan May went 2-for-2 with a homer.
Zach Jones, the winning pitcher, also contributed two hits. Eldon Peters worked the last two innings and got the last out with two Vikings on base.
Brandon Porter hit a three-run homer for Central.
“Blackmon had a great game,” Thompson said. “And it was good to see us finally make a lot of good plays in the field.”
Northwest Cabarrus got a long homer from Tanner Bigham, took advantage of numerous errors and pounded Mount Pleasant 11-3 in a matchup of SPC contenders.
Weston Smith (2-0) pitched another strong game for NWC. Smith and Michael Mariano had two hits each for the Trojans.
Nick Coble and A.J. James homered for the Tigers.
“Weston pitched excellent,” Northwest coach Joe Hubbard said. “They got all their runs on the two homers, and he didn’t walk anyone.”
Mount Pleasant pitched around Corey Seager, but Smith made the Tigers pay with a key two-run single.
North Rowan led Albemarle 4-0 in the third inning on Tuesday when the game was suspended by rain.
The teams will resume the game on a date to be announced.
Tyler Lequire and Luis Tejada powered home runs for East Davidson in an 11-5 loss to Ledford.
Colby Bessette hit his fourth homer of the season for West Davidson in a 7-2 loss to East Forsyth.

A.L. Brown linebacker Andrew Leslie has committed to Lenoir-Rhyne.
Leslie will play in this summer’s East-West All-Star Game in Greensboro.

Clark Alcorn (35), Eric Edwards (36), Troy Beaver (38) and Alex Lee (39) also had strong performances.
Grimsley’s Gerrick Polinsky shot 34 to share medalist honors with Nianouris and Dixon.

Maverick Miles (South Rowan) scored a run and drove in one in High Point’s 10-6 win against Appalachian State on Tuesday.
Trey Holmes (East Rowan) went 2-for-2, scored twice and knocked in one run for the Mountaineers.
Thomas Allen (East) pitched two innings and allowed one run as UNC Pembroke beat Mars Hill 11-2 on Wednesday.
Brevard reliever Kevin Hamilton (NW Cabarrus) was the winning pitcher on Wednesday as the Tornados surprised Erskine 12-11.
College tennis
Wingate claimed a pair of wins over host Catawba in SAC tennis on Wednesday afternoon.
Wingate’s women romped 9-0, while Wingate’s men took a 6-3 win against the Indians.
Catawba’s men are 10-6 overall and 0-3 in the SAC, while the women’s team is 9-8 and 0-3.
College softball
Catawba used big innings to sweep a doubleheader from visiting Lees-McRae on Wednesday at Whitley Field.
Catawba won 6-2 and 14-2 to improve to 16-10 overall. The Bobcats fell to 11-16.
Khourtni Hester homered in each game, including a grand slam, while Carly Sabat collected four hits in the doubleheader.
Alli Justice and Tara Gibbs had two-run doubles in the nightcap.
Brittany Murray (9-5) and Emily Huneycutt got the job done in the circle.
7th-grade hoops
Regular-season co-champions Southeast and Erwin will meet for the girls championship in the Rowan County Middle School Conference seventh-grade basketball tournament after winning semifinal thrillers on Wednesday at Knox. Both teams are 13-3 going into Friday’s 4:30 p.m. finals.
Top-seeded Southeast held off fifth-seeded West Rowan 28-25.
Shanice Miller broke a 25-all deadlock with a basket with 44 seconds to play. Taylor Martin then hit both ends of a one-and-one opportunity at the foul line for a three-point lead with 16 seconds to go. West missed a couple of shots in the final seconds.
Miller had a double-double, 11 points and 10 rebounds, for the Patriots. Martin had nine points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals. Adison Collins added eight points and three steals. Jordan Osborne and Madison Full had seven and six rebounds, respectively.
Khaila Hall led West (9-7) with 18 points, eight steals, four rebounds and three blocks before fouling out with 16 seconds to play. Peyton Greene added five points and 10 boards. Marissa Henderson grabbed eight rebounds.
Second-seeded Erwin outlasted No. 3 Mooresville 52-48 in an overtime battle.
Regulation ended at 46-all. Brittany Small scored four points in OT for the Eagles, including a go-ahead field goal with 46 seconds to play. Shenique Pharr added a late basket.
Small had 14 points and 21 rebounds for Erwin. Shenique Pharr also had 14 points and got six rebounds. Jocelyn Lowe had nine points and six boards. Shenell Pharr, Shenique’s twin, had eight points, seven rebounds and five assists. Melonye McCree came off the bench for five points and 12 boards.
Mooresville (11-5) was paced by Brianna Young’s 20 points. Lizzy Johnson scored all 11 of her points after halftime. Ashley Bowen added nine points. Young and Bowen were rebounding leaders.
The boys semifinal games will be played today. No. 2 West Rowan (12-3) faces No. 6 Mooresville (5-10) at 4:30 p.m. Top-seeded Knox (15-0) plays No. 5 Southeast (5-10) at 6. The winners meet at 6 p.m. Friday for the tourney title.
North golf tournament
The North Rowan Athletics Booster Club will hold the 9th Annual Bob Hundley Golf Tournament on Saturday, May 14, at Corbin Hills.
There will be a shotgun start at 2 p.m. The cost is $45 per player and includes lunch.

Women’s hoops
The Charlotte 49ers (24-9) defeated Liberty 62-56 in the first round of the Women’s NIT on Wednesday.
The 49ers tied the 1989-90 team for the most wins in a season in school history.
Epiphany Woodson enjoyed her 12th straight double-figure scoring with 22 points. She scored 16 in the first half. Amanda Dowe recorded her fourth double-figure scoring game of the season with 12 points and added nine rebounds. Jennifer Hailey added eight points and seven rebounds to the 49ers’ attack.
Appalachian State’s women ended their season with a 67-54 loss to South Carolina. Appalachian (25-7) set a program record for victories.
Ashlen Dewart led the Mountaineers with 14 points.
