Rockwell Christian students go toconvention
The weather was gloomy but spirits where high for 28 ninth- through 12th-grade students of Rockwell Christian School on March 28 as they boarded the bus headed for a week of competition at their Student Convention at The Wilds Christian Camp near Brevard.
The purpose of the Student Convention is to give Christian young people opportunities to develop leadership skills.
The convention motto is ěWhere else can one week last a lifetime?î
Precious few experiences will influence students for their entire lifetime. Student Convention represents one experience that can make that bold promise.
As one student affirmed, ěThe ACE Student Convention was a life changing experience.î
There were nearly 150 different categories of competition including academics, photography, art, athletics, music and platform.
From a field of nearly 500 students, RCS placed in 35 categories in the top 15, including a second-place award for over-all academics, first in basketball, first five in Bible memory, four of the top six in spelling, first in male piano solo, first in soccer (nearly breaking the record), first in 200 meter dash, and numerous other awards in the top six.
Twenty-two students qualified to attend the International Student Convention May 21-26 at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va.
Cannon students in Duke TIP program
CONCORD ó Most students wait until they are juniors or seniors to take the SAT or ACT exams, but a group of 11 Cannon School seventh- graders recently took the college entrance exams as part of the Duke University Talent Identification Program.
They did well enough to qualify for participation in the State Recognition Ceremony, which honors seventh-graders who have earned scores equal to or better than half of the college-bound seniors who took the tests. Additionally, one student, Reid Herrera, of Harrisburg, earned a trip to Duke University to attend the Grand Recognition Ceremony.
The Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP) 7th Grade Talent Search identifies students in 16 states who have scored in the 95th percentile on a grade-level achievement test. As part of the program, these academically talented students take above-level, college-entrance exams (SAT or ACT) to learn more about their abilities.
The following students qualified for state recognition: Davis Nelson, Salisbury; Austin Coale, Justin Fromke, Dylan Housman, Christina Stylianou, Concord; Angeli Gupta, Charlotte; Reid Herrera, Harrisburg; Isabella Jacoby, Sam Oddo, Padgett Powe, Huntersville; Abigail Sparrow, Davidson.
All 11 students will be honored later this spring in ceremonies at Elon University and Wake Forest University. Herrera will also be honored at a Grand Recognition Ceremony May 23 at Duke. He will receive a medallion as an acknowledgement of his achievement.
