Cannon School celebrated Pi Day (3.1415926535…) a little early with pie eating contests and the annual student pi recitation contest.
Congratulations to Daniel Lee, a junior from Davidson who recited 774 numbers of pi, breaking Cannon’s record of 660 set last year by alumna Lyndsay Cooper.
Pi Day was started by physicist Larry Shaw in San Francisco in 1989. March 14 was chosen because the numerical equivalent of the date (3/14) corresponds to the first three digits of pi, which is the circumference of a circle divided by the diameter. The number that never ends is important in a variety of fields, including engineering, architecture and aerospace.
