Salisbury’s soccer team got two more goals from Karen Presnell and beat West Davidson 4-1 for a CCC win, but what happened after the match was an even bigger highlight for SHS coach Matt Parrish.
West Davidson coach Chris Brown asked to speak to Salisbury’s seniors after the game and congratulated them not only on the win and on their careers, but on the level to which they had elevated the program.
“It was the classiest thing I’ve ever seen at Ludwig Stadium,” Parrish said. “He talked about the level both our programs have reached and talked about the mutual respect the programs have and how much he’s enjoyed competing against our girls.
“That was coming from our biggest rival, by far, so it was awesome. It was just a very cool thing.”
Callie Wynn scored early for West Davidson, outracing Salisbury keeper Olivia Rankin to a ball, and finishing with a perfect shot. It was the only shot the Dragons had in the first half.
“The first time we’ve been down since West Rowan, the second game of the season,” Parrish said.
It was 1-1 at halftime.
Presnell scored both her goals with her left foot, converting two perfect shots despite exceptional defense by Mo Yarboro.
Madison Kennedy finished with a goal and two assists, and fifth-ranked Salisbury (11-0-2, 6-0 CCC) took control the last 15 minutes.
Jenna Bryan scored her first goal of the season on a direct kick.
Malee Fisher, Taylor Slate, Susannah Dixon and Whitney Brown turned in stellar defensive efforts.
“Our defense was airtight,” Parrish said.
The only negative for the Hornets was an ankle injury sustained by Kennedy with eight minutes left.
Carson (4-10) got a hat trick from freshman Hannah Elmore and two goals from freshman Lindsay Moore and beat South Rowan 5-1 in NPC soccer on Wednesday.
Brittany Goodman put the Raiders ahead 1-0 from 18 yards out. Elmore tied it 1-1 before the half on a nice assist by Dakota Boardman.
Elmore scored on a direct kick to give the Cougars their first lead, and freshman Moore’s first goal of the season made it 3-1.
Carson is at West Rowan tonight.
Prep track
The North Rowan Track Invitational will be held on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m.
On Friday night, a banquet will be held at 7 p.m. at the Wrenn House in Salisbury to honor a number of individuals, living and deceased, who were instrumental in the success of North track and field and the Rowan Express AAU program.
Former North track and Rowan Express athletes are invited to attend and to spread the word.
Prep softball
Chelsea White struck out eight batters and East Rowan pulled out a 5-2 decision in nine innings at Cox Mill.
Correction: Kirstie Corriher hit a three-homer for South in Tuesday’s loss to West Iredell, rather than Kayla Corriher.
South is at home this afternoon in a makeup game against Carson. Both teams are contending for a playoff berth. South won the first meeting.
Prep tennis
East Rowan handled NPC foe North Iredell 6-3 with Devin Smith, Justin Allen, Evan Rodgers and Cameron Thomas winning in singles.
Smith-Allen and Chris Fleming-Andrew Daniels won in doubles.
Allen, Rodgers and Chandler Spry won in singles and Logan Casper-Smith and Fleming-Daniels won in doubles in a 5-4 decision against South Rowan on Wednesday.
Fleming-Daniels rallied from a 3-7 deficit to win 9-7 and turn the match.
West Rowan rolled over West Iredell 8-1 for an NPC win, while Salisbury topped CCC foe Lexington 9-0. Results are in Scoreboard.
Prep baseball
Carson rolled to an easy 17-1 NPC win at Statesville on Wednesday.
Kyle Youngo, Gunnar Hogan, Gavin Peeler, K.J. Pressley and Connor Bridges had two hits each.
Mitch Galloway was the winning pitcher, working four innings and striking out seven. He walked three, all in the first inning.
Statesville had two hits. Neither left the infield. Carson scored nine runs in the first inning to remove any doubt about the outcome.
“We probably should’ve got only one or two in the first, but they didn’t make some defensive plays,” Carson coach Chris Cauble said.
Boxes for Carson-North Iredell, South-West Iredell and Carson-Statesville are in Scoreboard.
East Rowan didn’t get to play North Davidson on Wednesday.
The Black Knights were rained out on Tuesday against CPC opponent Mount Tabor and elected to make that game up on Wednesday.
The game won’t be rescheduled.
North Hills beat Burlington Christian 13-2 behind solid pitching by Bryson Shepherd. Trent Gobble led the offense with three hits, three runs scored and four RBIs. Shepherd and Blake Hickman contributed two RBIs each.
College baseball
Garrett Furr hit a grand slam in the fifth inning to lift 15th-ranked Catawba to a 5-3 win against USC Aiken at Newman Park on Wednesday. Catawba (33-8) has won 18 of its last 21. Trailing 2-0 in the fifth, Catawba filled the bases on singles by Greg Lawson, Julio Zubillaga (Carson) and Ryan Bostian (South Rowan). After Chris Dula’s infield hit scored a run, Furr connected.
Joe Kase (2-1) pitched six innings. Nathan Furr went the final three frames and earned a save. Bostian, Dula, Furr, Lawson and Blake Houston (South) had two hits each.
Pfeiffer opens play in Wilson in the Conference Carolinas Tournament against Belmont Abbey today at 11 a.m.
Appalachian State’s Trey Holmes (East Rowan) hit a three-run homer to key a 6-5 win against Tennessee on Tuesday.
Pro baseball
The Kannapolis Intimidators (5-1) won 8-3 at Delmarva on Wednesday. Juan Silverio and Dan Black homered in a four-run sixth inning.
College softball
Catawba split a doubleheader against Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday, losing 4-2 before winning 10-6.
College golf
Virginia’s Will Collins (Salisbury) shot 6-under 66 in the final round of the River Landing Intercollegiate in Wallace, N.C. to help Virginia to a seventh-place finish. Collins finished ninth at 4-under. It was the eighth top-10 finish of his career.
College lacrosse
Catawba’s Braden Artem was named to the All-Deep South Conference first team. Catawba’s Marty Tuohy, Fred Turcio, Casey Chinn and Drew Stoltz made second team. Cory Losselyong was Honorable Mention.
College gymnastics
Navy gymnast Dylan Parrott (South Rowan) and two teammates will compete in an NCAA qualifying meet at Ohio State this afternoon.
Parrott, who is making his second consecutive trip to the qualifier, will compete on the parallel bars, horizontal bar and in the floor exercise.
Team and all-around final competitions will take place on Friday at 7 p.m., while the individual finals will occur on Saturday at 7 p.m.
In 2010, Parrott advanced to the finals of the horizontal bar competition and took 10th place.
This season, Parrott has finished first in seven meets in the floor exercise and has 13 top-five finishes on the parallel bars and horizontal bar.
Local golf
Regina Bell made a hole-in-one on the 145-yard No. 2 hole at Corbin Hills. She used a driver.
Middle school baseball
West Rowan defeated China Grove 7-1 on Tuesday behind a strong pitching performance by Omar Bautista.
Bautista scattered 3 hits over 52/3 innings and struck out 11. Juan Garcia hit two home runs for the Bulldogs and drove in three runs.
West plays at home today against North Rowan.
Corriher-Lipe beat North Rowan 17-5.
Winning pitcher A-rod Kennerly allowed four hits in the five-inning game. Kameron McVay and Burke Fulcher had two hits each. Kennerly and Eric Stowe scored three runs each for the Yellow Jackets.
Middle school soccer
China Grove’ s girls topped West Rowan 4-0. Taylor Quinn was match MVP for the Bulldogs (3-3-1). Other WR standouts were Addie Coleman and Victoria Patterson.
West Rowan’s boys fell to China Grove 2-0. Andrew Raynes made eights saves for the Bulldogs. Other standouts for West (0-6-1) were Pedro Nichols and Junior Bautista.
Erwin’s girls won 4-0 against Knox. Kaleigh Troutman scored twice for the Eagles, and Josseline Gonzalez and Devynne Brown had a goal apiece. Hannah Jones had an outstanding game for Erwin, and Kennedy Lambert posted her fourth shutout in goal.
