KANNAPOLIS ó This weekend, downtown Kannapolis begins its two-day celebration of the arts on Friday, May 6 at 5 p.m. with ěFestival of the Arts,î sponsored by Cooperative Christian Ministry and A. L. Brown High School. Brian Free and Assurance will perform at 7 p.m., sponsored by Central Baptist Church and Ford Broadcasting.
Saturdayís events begin at 9 a.m. with local dance studios performing; 11:45 a.m. is a Zumba Party, 2 p.m. is Tsunami Wave Riders, and at 7 p.m. the Tim Clark Band will perform. At 10 p.m. there will be fireworks.
Helicopter rides are available throughout the day, craft vendors are open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Food is available until 10 p.m.
There will be a Super Kids Fun and Fitness Zone on West A Street, free for children.
Kannapolis Cruise-In hosts the car and truck show on Oak Avenue; registration begins at 9 a.m. and awards will be presented at 4 p.m.. Entry fee is $20 per entry.
Non-perishable food items and school supplies will be collected to support the food bank at West Point Baptist Church. Rowan Regional Medical Center sponsors the Village Fest Music and Craft Festival.

SEMS ëPaloozaí
Southeast Middle School is holding a ěPaloozaî event on Saturday, May 7 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Peeler Road, just off of I-85.
There will be games, plants for sale, inflatables, hayrides, basket raffle, food and fun for all ages.

Painting workshops
Jim Taylor at the Contemporary Realism Studio and Gallery will hold oil painting workshops on Wednesdays, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. with a break for lunch. Call for artists
Center for Faith & the Arts of Salisbury is seeking works for its summer invitational art show, ěThe Art of the Silhouette ó Exploratory Media in Black White.î
Works will be accepted in all 2D and 3D media, but all works must be black and white and include an underlying theme of one or more of the following: grief, despair, forgiveness, acceptance.
Entrants submit a digital photo and description of the work via email. Submission deadline is June 1. Drop off for selected works is June 17, 18 and 20.
The opening reception will be Friday, June 24 and the exhibit runs June 24 – Aug. 13.
Entry fee is $15 for one piece, $25 for two pieces. Prizes: $75 first prize, $65 second prize, $50 third prize.

Vocalist accepted
Livingstone College student LeíSondra Brown has been accepted into the Studio Division of La Musica Lirica. This six- week vocal program (June 20 -July 22) is an international music program for young vocal artists in Novafeltria, Italy.
There will be a benefit concert to help her meet her financial requirements (tuition, housing, airfare etc.) on Saturday, May 7 at 5 p.m. at Soldiers Memorial AME Zion Church, 306 N. Church St. Additional soloists are Rebecca Stinson, Joanne Harrison and Teresa Moore-Mitchell.

ëThe Orphan Trainí
WINSTON-SALEM ó Reynolda House Museum of American Art and The Childrenís Theatre of Winston-Salem will present ěThe Orphan Trainî on Friday, May 6 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 7 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
This production is the heart-warming story of nine orphans on an orphan train that departed New York City on May 28, 1914, bound for Midwestern towns in search of homes for the children.
The performance is in conjunction with the museumís spring exhibition, ěTrains that Passed in the Night: The Photographs of O. Winston Link,î on view through June 19, 2011. Ticket cost includes admission to the exhibition.

Facing Uncertainty
A day-long workshop on themes of faith in the face of uncertainty will take place June 4 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Center for Faith and the Arts, 207 W. Harrison St.
Through spontaneous movement, coloring or painting, writing, and reflection, artists will meditate on Rilkeís famous quote, ěBe patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart/ and try to love the questions themselves.î
The workshop is for beginning writers or artists as well as for seasoned ones. Paper, pencils, and pastels will be supplied; bring preferred art supplies and a journal or notebook.

Brew and music fest
