Sigma Gamma Rho attend conference
The Lambda Epsilon Sigma Salisbury-Rowan Alumnae chapter attended the Northeast Regional Conference of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. held April 28-May 1 in Raleigh, where attendees engaged in 48 hours of service and empowerment initiatives.
Most of the service projects that conference attendees participated in focused on the themes of SGRís signature international program ó Project Reassurance, the aim of which is to promote responsible living for teens by focusing on the prevention of teen pregnancy, personal decision-making, character building, promotion of moral values and making healthy choices.
The April 28 fundraising dinner at the Heart of the City of Acorns was followed by a candlelight vigil and proceeds benefited an agency for homeless mothers and their children. On April 29 the Raleigh caravan visited the NC Association of Educators Headquarters, volunteered at the Wake Childrenís Medical Center in conjunction with the Raleigh Junior League and toured the Krispy Kreme doughnut factory (a percentage of the proceeds will benefit Camp Junction). On the same day, the Durham caravan visited the Mechanics and Farmers Bank Corporate Headquarters, volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House and visited the Haiti Alley Foundation.
Throughout the conference, sorority members participated in the Sigma Public Education and Research (SPEAR) Foundation initiative ěSoles for little Souls,î the goal of which is to provide disadvantaged children 100,000 pairs of shoes as they head back to school in the fall. This national shoe drive will be held in every community, including Salisbury-Rowan. Distribution of the donated shoes will take place simultaneously throughout the country on August 13.

Beta Sigma Phi Founders Day
The Salisbury-Rowan chapters of Beta Sigma Phi sorority celebrated its 80th Founders Day with a banquet at the Harold B. Jarrett Post on Lincolnton Road.
The Lambda Master chapter held a yellow rose and candlelight ceremony in remembrance of Brenda Foil who passed away March 16.
The new theme for the 2011-12 year was announced as ěBuilding Our Future on Tradition.î
D. Anne Simerson received the International Founders award for her work on the Concord convention.
Woman of the year awards for each chapter were: Lambda Master – Loretta Burleyson, Xi Delta Chi – Penny Rice, Xi Alpha Delta – Dottie Setzer, Iota Psi – Gerri Butler, presented by last yearís woman of the year, Karen Smith.
Mrs. Butler is the oldest member of Beta Sigma Phi in the Salisbury chapter at age 94. She received a woman of the year pin, yellow roses and a girl of the year trophy.
Gail Young was recognized by the chapterís city council as woman of the year.
New city council officers are: president Millie Campbell, vice president Linda Tutterow, recording secretary Penny Rice, corresponding secretary Peggy Coxie, treasurer D. Anne Simerson.
The Iota Psi chapter of Beta Sigma installed new officers for the year 2011-12 at a ceremony at the Meadows in Rockwell following an ice cream social with the residents.
New officers are: president Gail Young, vice president Brittiny Gilbert, treasurer Vicki Lippard, corresponding secretary Gladys Joyce, recording secretary Fawn Sallee, city council representative D. Anne Simerson, alternate representative Brenda Gobble.
