Concert Choir
This years’ Concert Choir presentation will be a concert/fund-raiser combination featuring The Liebeslieder Waltzes Opus 52 by Brahms, followed by dessert and coffee and mingling, then the choir will sing a few final numbers.
The two performances, Friday and Saturday, May 13 and 14 at Union Lutheran Church, 4770 Bringle Ferry Road, are at 7:30 pm each night.
The Liebeslieder Waltzes are ‘love Songs’ with a waltz rhythm setting. They are romantic in every sense and tells the many facets of love including longing, reluctance, denial, sadness, obsession, joy, rapture and more. The collection of translations were from Russian, Polish and Hungarian folk poetry by the German poet and philosopher Georg Friederich Daumer (1800-1875).
Salisbury-Rowan Choral Society
The Salisbury-Rowan Choral Society’s annual spring concert, “American Legacy and Spring Pops Concert,” is Sunday, May 15 at 3 p.m. at The Civic Center.
Tickets may be purchased at the door, $8 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.
The “American Legacy and Spring Pops Concert,” showcasing a distinctly American style, is divided into four major genres: popular classics from chart topping artists such as the Jackson 5 and Beach Boys; musical theater pieces from Broadway shows we all know and love; the unique textures of American choral music; spiritual, folk, and gospel music.

Piedmont Prime Time Community Band
CONCORD — The Piedmont Prime Time Community Band ninth annual spring concert is on Friday at 7:45 p.m.
“Space, the Final Frontier,” will include “Also Sprach Zarathustra,” made famous in the movie “2001 A Space Odyssey,” selections from Gustav Holst’s “The Planets: Mars and Jupiter,” movie music by John Williams, a medley of themes from “ Star Trek,”music from “Star Wars” and more.

Piedmont Choral Society presents ‘Requiem’
CONCORD — The Piedmont Choral Society and the sanctuary choir of First Presbyterian Church, Concord, will combine to present John Rutter’s “Requiem” with orchestra on Friday at 7 p.m. and again on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Forest Hill United Methodist Church, 265 Union Street, N., Concord.
The group is under the direction of Jeff Price and organist is Jacqueline Yost. The concerts are free, and a reception will be held in the fellowship hall following the concerts.

Southern Piedmont Singers concert
KANNAPOLIS — Southern Piedmont Singers presents their inaugural concert, “Live Your Dream” on Saturday, May 14 at 7 p.m. at North Kannapolis United Methodist Church, 1301 N. Main St.
Southern Piedmont Singers is a new local community chamber choir for youth and adults. Repertoire will range from classical to modern.

NSSA autograph session at Waterworks
As part of the 52nd annual National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association awards weekend, an autograph session will be held Waterworks Visual Arts Center Sunday from 2-3:30pm. The session is free and open to the public.
Among the 30 or so sports celebrities at the signing will be Hall of Fame inductee Bob Ryan of the Boston Globe, National Sportscaster of the Year Mike Tirico of ESPN’s Monday Night Football, Gary Hahn, the “Voice of the NC State Wolfpack.”
“We are so excited to have our award winners give their time to the people of Salisbury. It’s a chance for local sports fans — who see these people on TV, listen to them on the radio, and read them in newspapers, magazines and online – to get to meet them and see their human side.”
The weekend will be capped off by Monday night’s awards banquet and Hall of Fame induction ceremonies.
Strawberry Festival
GOLD HILL —Historic Gold Hill Village will host a strawberry festival and art and craft walk Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
The event features the 12th annual group Gold Hill bike ride, “Mine to Mine,” and local artists and crafters on site.
Mine to Mine requires a $20 registration fee that includes lunch at the Arbor in Gold Hill beginning at noon.

Salisbury Swing Band
The Salisbury Swing Band will return to the J.F. Hurley Family YMCA, 828 W Jake Alexander Blvd., on Saturday for a night of music, and dance.
The dance will be held in the big gym from 7-10 p.m. Entry will be from the front of the building toward the left hand side where an entry sign will be visible.

Grease auditions
Piedmont Players Theatre (PPT) announces auditions for the youth production of Grease on May 23-24 in the Norvell Theater auditorium. Auditions are open to all current middle and high school students by appointment only.

Barbeque Tour
CONCORD — the Journeys Backyard Barbeque Tour is a free alternative sports and music festival making a national tour stop on Saturday, May 14 at Concord Mills, from noon-7 pm.
This all-ages interactive event is a select stop on a five-city national tour, featuring live shows by international athletes, free concerts by national headliners, and talent competitions for local music talent with thousands of dollars in cash and prizes.
Top action-sports athletes from around the world will fly through the air in demonstrations of the best of freestyle motocross, BMX and skateboard in a 60,000 square foot “alternative sport playground” of ramps and jumps, and feature a rare appearance by X Games superstars Bucky Lasek and Dennis McCoy.
There will also be free concerts by some of the hottest bands in the country. Some of the best local alternative music artists will also compete in an American Idol-style “Battle of the Bands” with winners judged by live fan voting. The interactive fun zone features more than 15 booths with free games, prizes, and giveaways, including an artistic shoe coloring/design contest, where one fan’s winning shoe design is actually produced by Converse.

St. Thomas Players auditions
St. Thomas Players is holding auditions for “Almost, Maine” at the Florence Busby Corriher Theatre (FBC) on the campus of Catawba College.
Auditions are from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, May 21 and Sunday, May 22. Performances are Aug. 3-13 and will be directed by Justin Dionne.
Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. Parts are available for performers who can play mid-twenties to late-thirties.

Beach night series at High Rock Boat & Ski
High Rock Boat & Ski Club, 257 Boat Club Lane, is hosting “Boat Club Wednesdays” Summer Beach Night series at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays through Aug. 31.

Jewish festival
DAVIDSON — On Thursday, May 19, from 4:15-6:15 PM, the Beth Shalom of Lake Norman congregation and its Center for Jewish Learning is sponsoring a one-of-a-kind cultural event on the grounds of St. Alban’s Church, 301 Caldwell Lane.
This outdoor event will feature an Israeli-style celebration of the holiday of Lag B’Omer featuring an appearance by former Israeli Defense Forces officer Mor Green in an informative fireside talk, free Kosher hot dogs and refreshments, live and recorded Israeli music and songs featuring students from the religious school. Free parking is available in the back of the church.
Gourd Lady appearance
KANNAPOLIS — Margaret “Sparky” Sparkman is known as The Gourd Lady and has made more than one appearance with Jay Leno on the Tonight Show.
On May 14 from 1-3 p.m., “Sparky” will meet and greet guests and provide photo opportunities, proceeds from which will benefit the Cannon Memorial YMCA, Kannapolis branch.
Burke County tour of homes has Rowan ties
A “By the Waters Tour of Homes” will be held Saturday from 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. in the Lake James Area of Burke County. The tour includes people with ties to Rowan County, including Janie and Steve Matthews, who had two homes in Salisbury’s West Square Historic District, and Mary and David Fortin, who used to live in Faith.
