BADIN — Alcoa has awarded more than $7.2 million in contracts as part of the company’s effort to prepare the former Badin Works site for redevelopment, the company announced this week.
Additional contracts are expected to be awarded throughout the year as work progresses.
Redevelopment of the former aluminum smelting plant site includes partial building demolition and restoration of some of the current structures within the 850,000-square-foot facility, along with branding the site and upgrading site-related signage.
Kevin Anton, Alcoa’s chief sustainability officer, said in a press release sent Tuesday that Alcoa has been marketing the location over the past three or four months to many companies who may have an interest in locating there.
“We are very excited to get the redevelopment of the Badin site under way. This is a significant investment by Alcoa, and a big step toward bringing new jobs to Badin,” Anton said in the press release. “We are excited about what redevelopment will mean to the community, and the new construction and permanent jobs it will bring.”
Alcoa has led the recruiting effort and is also working with local and state economic development officials to attract new employers to Badin.
The majority of site redevelopment work will begin in the second quarter of 2011, with the goal of having the majority of required improvements completed by the end of 2011.
Redevelopment contracts have been awarded to:
• Stewart Engineering Inc., based in Charlotte. Stewart has been retained to provide project management services to drive a variety of activities at the site to successful completion. Stewart, which has a full-time project manager on site, will also be providing surveying and civil engineering services.
• Apex Engineering, of Concord. Apex has been hired to perform civil, structural and mechanical engineering services and architectural services for various areas of the site.
• Western Waterproofing Company, with an office in Charlotte. Western Waterproofing will be repointing all of the brickwork and repairing the stone work on the former Badin Hospital building in the town of Badin. Alcoa currently uses this building for various internal meetings.
• REI Engineers, based in Charlotte. REI is performing an assessment of key building roofs to identify any areas of concern that need to be repaired in order for a tenant to take occupancy.
• Jackson Demolition Service Inc., based in Schenectady, N.Y. Jackson Demolition will complete the demolition of buildings on the site which have been identified as having limited to no redevelopment value.
The company has committed to working with companies that are established in the Badin area and region, including Highland Environmental Services, JF Lomma Inc. and Carolinas Environmental. In addition, Jackson committed to using approved local hauling and trucking services. In total, Jackson expects spending 50 percent of project costs with local contractors.
• NCM Demolition and Remediation LP (formerly CST Environmental LP), a national demolition company. NCM has been hired to remove equipment from the interior of the former Ingot Plant building at the facility to prepare this very marketable building for quick occupancy. NCM will be performing this work out of their Southwest Regional Office located in Charlotte.
