Students at Cannon win medals

CONCORD ó Cannon School students in grades nine-12 earned one gold medal, five silver medals and eight bronze medals in the National Spanish Exam, a competition sponsored in March by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.
ěAttaining a medal for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States, with 140,373 students participating in 2011,î said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, exams national director.
The National Spanish Exam is a rigorous, competitive exam taken annually by the nationís top high school Spanish language students. It measures student proficiency, vocabulary and grammatical skills.
Cannonís highest-scoring student, Bruna Liborio of Concord, earned a gold medal for scoring at or above the 95th percentile nationally.
Cannon Schoolís other national-level award winners are:
Silver medal (scoring from the 85th to 94th percentile): Olivia Andretti and Katie Maness of Mooresville; Nila Kannan, University City area; Lydia Middleton, Harrisburg; Gavin West, Charlotte.
Bronze medal (scoring from the 75th to 84th percentile): Cassie Calvert, Dina Ibrahim, Concord; Shelby Dyl, Davidson; Ian Hicks, Huntersville; Stefan Letica, Austen Poteet, Tias Sen, University City area; Derek Pace, Midland.
