CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ó Jordan Leyland’s two-run double to center with two out in the bottom of the eighth inning gave UC Irvine the lead and the Anteaters beat top-seeded Virginia 6-4 on Sunday to force a third game in the Charlottesville Super Regional.
The winner Monday will advance to the College World Series.
In a game delayed at its midpoint for 4 hours, 18 minutes by a monsoon-like storm, UC Irvine (43-17) overcame deficits of 3-0 and 4-3, the latter with a three-run rally in the eighth.
S. Carolina 8, Connecticut 2
COLUMBIA, S.C. ó Christian Walker homored in the eighth to break a tie and defending national champion South Carolina turned three straight inning-ending double plays to beat Connecticut and sweep the series.
South Carolina put the game away with a five-run ninth, wrapping up its second consecutive trip to Omaha, Neb., and fifth since 2002. It was the Gamecocks’ 11th straight NCAA tournament victory, a streak that started last year in the College World Series.
Texas 4, Arizona St. 2
AUSTIN, Texas ó Mark Payton had a two-out RBI single to give Texas the lead in the bottom of the sixth, then scored on a throwing error to help the Longhorns beat Arizona State to win the Austin Super Regional and advance to their record 34th College World Series.
Florida St. 23, Texas A&M 9
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ó Stuart Tapley hit two home runs and drove in five runs, Justin Gonzalez had a three-run homer and six RBIs and Florida State routed Texas A&M to force a third game.
The winner Monday will advance to the College World Series.
Jayce Boyd hit his third home run in three game games for Florida State (46-18). He finished 4 for 4, drove in three runs and scored five times.
The Seminoles set a season high for runs and a school record for runs in a Super Regional game.
Florida 8, Mississippi St. 6
GAINESVILLE, Fla. ó Preston Tucker hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning and the Gators beat Mississippi State to win the series 2-1.
