Salisbury Symphony announces board
The Salisbury-Rowan Symphony Society members have elected a new board of directors. The class of 2014 includes new members Lynda Errante, Fonda Kirk, Tina Mashburn and Dr. Betty Middleton. Current members who round out the class are Mary James, Dr. Ronald Smith and Dr. Martha West. Other new members include Dotty Clement (class of 2012) and Kathi Hill (class of 2013).
Bob Clement has accepted the position of president of the board. He will be assisted by vice president Dr. Jerry Cochran, secretary Dr. Carl Girelli and treasurer Cynthia Thomas. Other volunteers serving on the board include Chris Ferguson, Elizabeth Kaufmann, Betty Mickle (retiring president), Winnie Mikkelson, Mark Perry, Dr. Mary Frances Edens, Elia Gegorek, and Dr. Faleese Moore-Jenkins. Tom Wolpert, new president of the Symphony Guild, represents the fund-raising group of the Symphony Society and is a voting member of the board.
A board retreat is scheduled for June 18 at the Catawba College Library. All current, retiring and new members of the board will meet to explore plans for the future which include the 25th anniversary of David Hagy as music director (2012-2013 season) and the 50th anniversary of the Salisbury Symphony (2016-2017 season). Retiring members to be recognized and thanked then are Dr. Catrelia Hunter, Esther Marioneaux, Dr. Sarah Hensley, Jean Wurster and Dr. Herman Felton as well as past Guild president Kathy Dunn.

Boyden High 60th
The Boyden High School graduating class of 1951 met May 28 for its 60th class reunion.Class members gathered in the Messinger Room at the Rowan Museum to greet friends and renew old acquaintances.
The Messinger Room used to be called the Youth Center when the class of í51 graduated. The ěyoungstersî would pay a fee of 15 cents to be a member of the center where they would go on weekends to dance. The center consisted of folding chairs, a jukebox and a chaperone, Mrs. Kizziah. Most of the class had been members and had not seen the room since their youth. Most were surprised at the difference they found. Class member Clarence Bostian, Jr. could even produce his membership card from 1950, allowing him to enter free!
Clarence ěClancyî Bostian, Jr., the class treasurer, served as master of ceremonies and welcomed the 68 classmates in attendance. Music of the 1950s era was played during the catered dinner. Rodney Callaway gave the invocation. The 53 deceased class members were remembered by a special lighted candle along with a memorial plaque. The President of the Student Association of 1951, Charles ěBunnyîLink was in attendance and recognized.
Rodney Callaway served as reunion chairman along with his committee of Hazel Fisher Epting, Scout Bost Lomax, Julia Cohen Callaway, Barbara Thompson Link, Clarence Bostian, Jr., Barbara ěBootsî Casper Vogt. Decorations were provided with special assistance from Joedy Dagenhart and Ann Stoner Bostian.
