For The Salisbury PostThe produce growers in Rowan County are in their busiest time of the year. Hundreds of bushels of tomatoes, cucumbers, squash and corn are harvested every day in our area. Other fruits and vegetables are now at their peak or soon will be. We are fortunate to live in a climate where farmers are able to grow a tremendous amount and variety of produce for many months during the year. We are further blessed to be able to obtain these products when they are at their best at the Salisbury Farmers Market. The large number of visitors to the market attests to the high quality of products available each week.
In addition to plenty of corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash and onions, you will find plenty of okra and peppers as well as zucchini, potatoes, cabbage and eggplant. Cress Farm had their first October beans last week and most everyone has great looking green beans.
Summer fruit and berries are making an appearance in time for the July 4th parties. Hill Farm and Country Garden is now picking blackberries and blueberries. Most of the growers have peaches on hand. Cantaloupes are also a favorite item and are really sweet this year.
