A website from the U.S. Department of Agriculture is a boost to farmers across North Carolina, whose contact information and products are listed on ěKnow Your Farmer, Know Your Foodî so that restaurants and consumers can buy local. That movement is increasingly important to people who want to do business with folks close to home.
But itís apparently not important to Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-5th, whoís trying to kill funding for the site in the name of budget-cutting. She says the program within USDA is not accountable. But it is, as part of a federal agency whose officials must answer for their programs.
And this is a good one, helping farmers compete against imported products. Foxx takes a curious, anti-constituent position here. This doesnít raise the price of food. Itís not some big bureaucracy. Itís a website. Her action is embarrassing, or should be.
