Area sports briefs: Throwback continues

Three games are scheduled in the Scooter Sherrill Alumni Throwback basketball tourney tonight at Carson.
Admission for the night is $6.
North Rowan takes on South Rowan at 6:30 p.m. West Rowan, led by Sherrill and Donte Minter, meets North Meck at 7:45 p.m. Salisbury takes on East Rowan at 9 p.m.
Leonard Owens (UTEP) is playing for the Salisbury team this season.
Five tournament games, plus an AAU game, will be staged on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m. Admission for the day will be $10. Pro cheerleaders will be on hand for the final.
College football
Catawba placed four defensive players on the preseason All-SAC first team released by the league on Thursday.
Named to the squad were linebacker Lakeem Perry, DB Jumal Rolle, lineman Damein Lee and return specialist L.J. McCray.
Second team picks from Catawba included linebacker Cory Johnson, running back Josh Wright, long snapper D.J. Davis and kicker Thomas Trexler.

Major leagues
Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) pitched a scoreless eighth on Thursday and helped the New York Mets beat Cincinnati 10-9.
Minor leagues
Rudy Brown (South Rowan) pitched two scoreless innings for Burlington on Thursday to lower his ERA to 2.18.
Bristol’s Keegan Linza (North Rowan) pitched 11/3 scoreless innings on Thursday to 0.73.
Hudson Valley’s Craige Lyerly (East Rowan, Catawba) had two hits on Thursday,while Hagerstown’s Wade Moore (West Rowan, Catawba) doubled and drew two walks.
Phil Negus pitched six no-hit innings as the Kannapolis Intimidators beat Asheville 2-1 on Thursday. Dan Black knocked in the winning run in the ninth.
Independent baseball
Grand Prairie’s David Thomas (Catawba) hit his seventh homer on Wednesday in the American Association.
Also in the American Association, Lincoln’s Garrett Sherrill (A.L. Brown) has six straight scoreless relief outings.
Youth baseball
The SBA Canes 13U Black win the Triple Crown National Championship in Myrtle Beach.
The Canes recently competed in the 64-team Triple Crown Nationals, a tournament that included teams from all over the country and went 9-1 in the event, outscoring opponents 121-31.
The Canes are currently ranked 12th in the nation.
The roster includes Jack Owens, Tristan Baker, Jake Holtzapple, Clay Hunt, Bailey Meeks, Aaron Pilkington, Josh Hoglund, Drew Swoope, Zach Farmer and Kevin Dobos.
East Rowan’s 10U all-stars split a doubleheader on the first day of the Cal Ripken Southeast Regional in New Bern on Thursday. East beat Benton County (Tenn.) 13-3 in its first game but dropped a 17-2 decision to Goose Creek (S.C.) in its second game. East plays Warren County (Tenn.) Friday at 5:30.
Local golf
Salisbury’s Alex Nianouris finished tied for 19th in the Carolinas Junior Championship held at Gaston Country Club. Nianouris shot 71-68-77 — 216.
Salisbury’s Troy Beaver shot 73-74-70 — 217 and tied for 28th.
Physicals at West Middle
Rowan Family Physicians will do sports physicals in the West Rowan Middle gym on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 8:30 a.m.-noon.
This is open to all Rowan County athletes. The cost is $10 – cash only. Proceeds go to the WRMS Athletic Boosters.
